NEW YORK –

Jets coach Rex Ryan wasted no time Monday getting the hype machine rolling for Saturday’s showdown with the Giants.

“I recognize that they’re an excellent football team, but I think we’re better,” Ryan said on a conference call.

The Jets and Giants are both coming off disappointing losses Sunday, but that has not taken away from this week’s game. The loser won’t officially be eliminated from playoff contention, but it will deal them a serious blow.

Besides the playoff implications, Ryan will drive the interest in this game — can he back up his boasts or will the Giants shut him up? Ryan wrote in his book that he believes the Jets are the “big brother” to the Giants in the football landscape.

“I never came here to be little brother to anyone. So, it’s on,” Ryan said.

He later added, “There’s no way I’m going to be second fiddle. If we were playing the New York Yankees, I don’t want to be second fiddle to them.”

Ryan, who is in his third year as Jets coach, said it is not debatable which team has been better since he arrived.

“Certainly we were the better team the first two years,” Ryan said. “We made the playoffs, went to the championship game. To say that a team is better than you that never made the playoffs is ridiculous. Clearly, we were the better team my first two years here. We get to prove it on Saturday who the best team is this year.”

Ryan acknowledged he leads the way in pushing this rivalry to a place its never been before.

“Sure there’s a lot of talk going back and forth, most of it driven by me,” he said. “But you know what? I’ll stand by everything I’ve ever said. I didn’t come here to be anybody’s little brother.

“I came here to win, to be looked at that way and to take over not just this city, even though it’s the city to take over, but also this league. I haven’t accomplished that yet. Saturday, I think, will go a long way toward doing that.”

Naturally, Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka disagreed, predicting Big Blue will prove the outspoken Jets coach wrong.

“Talking trash isn’t going to help you out on the field,” he said. “I know we’re the better team. We just have to go out there and prove it.”

The Jets are coming off a 45-19 thrashing at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving them tied with Cincinnati at 8-6 for the final AFC playoff spot.

The Giants, despite a lackluster 23-10 home loss to the Redskins Sunday, can still win the NFC East by beating the Jets and Cowboys in the final two games of the season.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – They have not won a game in a month, but the New York Giants hope their latest loss can fuel a last, desperate push to reach the playoffs.

Coming off a humiliating 49-24 walloping by the New Orleans Saints, the Giants battled the unbeaten Green Bay Packers (12-0) to the last gasp Sunday, falling 38-35 on a field goal kicked with no time left on the clock.

That dropped the Giants to 6-6 for the season with four games left, but the close fight showed the New Yorkers they could at least match it with the best of the NFL.

The Giants must reverse their fortunes starting Sunday night in Dallas against the Cowboys (7-5), who lead them in the NFC East by one game, or forget about the postseason.

No problem, according to one Giants defensive back Antrel Rolle.

“Without a doubt, we will be in that postseason,” he told WFAN radio.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin and quarterback Eli Manning would not go so far as to guarantee a playoff berth, but both hoped the intensity the club showed would carry over.

“We have four games to go and three of them in our division,” Coughlin said.

“We have to regroup and I think this brings us together even tighter than we have ever been before as a team.

“It can be a positive if you play the way that we played, and if you give the effort that we gave and if you play with the intensity that we played with. Those are the kind of emotional things that bind you together.”

This week’s game is the first of two against the Cowboys. They also meet in the last game of the season on New Year’s Day. In between, the Giants play Washington and the New York Jets. A sweep of the final four games would guarantee the NFC East title for the Giants.

Manning said there was a lot the players could take away from their hard-fought loss.

“They’re playing the best football and we had them tied up with 58 seconds (left),” said Manning, who threw three touchdown passes. “I think we have to try to take something from this game, take some momentum into these next games.”

SPRINGBOARD LOSS

The Giants have used a defeat against an unbeaten team as a springboard before.

In the final game of the 2007 season, New York had already clinched a wildcard berth with no chance to improve their playoff status against the 15-0 New England Patriots.

Yet rather than rest some banged-up regulars, the Giants dedicated themselves to trying to stop the Pats from going undefeated, and fought fiercely before falling by the same 38-35 score they lost to the Packers.

Giving the Patriots such a fight seemed to boost the New Yorkers’ confidence.

New York went on to playoff road wins over Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay to reach the Super Bowl against the Patriots. The Giants beat them 17-14 to deprive New England of a perfect season and claim the NFL title for themselves.

“That game we lost, but I think everybody felt good about the way we played and had a little momentum going into the playoffs,” Manning said in recalling the 2007 title season.

“Obviously it’s going to be a similar feel with these next four games. They’re all going to be playoff-style games where we need to win.”

Coughlin hoped for the same bounce-back effect.

“We have four games to go and every one of these games is critical to our future,” he said. “We will battle. We will battle. We have to find a way to win.”

Manning said the urgency did not add pressure.

“That’s playoff atmosphere. You want to play in must-win games,” explained Manning. “We know if we win, then we’re in the playoffs. That’s exciting. It starts this week.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Growing up in an impoverished city a little more than 11 miles from New York Giants headquarters, Victor Cruz heard his share of gunshots as a child, and he isn’t exaggerating.

The wide receiver got used to them, and it might have saved his life early Tuesday morning when gunshots erupted at a New York City supper club as he was celebrating his 25th birthday with defensive end Chris Canty and friends.

There were reports that five Giants were in the club at the time of the incident that left one man dead and two people wounded..

However, safety Antrel Rolle said he left the club before the shooting, and receiver Hakeem Nicks and cornerback Aaron Ross denied being there that night.

The players had off Tuesday, so they had no curfew.

The moment Cruz heard the pop, he got under the table at the Juliet Supper Club in trendy Chelsea section of Manhattan and made sure everyone in his party hit the floor, too.

“It happened so fast,” Cruz said Wednesday after the Giants (6-3) practiced for Sunday’s night game against the rival Philadelphia Eagles (3-6).

“I was just sitting there and you could hear it on the other side, the shots go off,” he said. “The rest was just me on the ground and trying to get out of there.”

Cruz several minutes on the floor, worried about more shots and the possibility of being trampled by the people trying to get out.

“Anytime anything like that happens it is frightening no matter how many times you have heard a gunshot,” said Cruz, who is tied with Nicks for the team lead with 40 receptions and four touchdowns. “Growing up where I grew up things like that were common, but not necessarily in the same area you are in. It’s definitely scary.”

The Montgomery Park area of Paterson where Cruz grew up had its moments. There were nights he remembered hearing gunshots outside his window.

“I’ve heard some being out as a young guy in the streets, being at a pickup game playing basketball and at the park across the street. You see gunshots going off and everybody running and things like that. It’s not the first time I’ve heard one or seen things like that, but you definitely don’t want to see one now at this point in my life.”

Gunshots in a New York City nightclub are something the Giants would like to never hear about again. Receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg in late November 2008 when his gun slipped out of the waistband of his sweats.

His absence at the end of that season crippled the Giants’ offense and led to a first-round playoff loss to the Eagles. He also missed the next two seasons, serving a prison term on a weapons charge.

Cruz said he isn’t the type to bring a gun to a club, but he knows the Giants’ history.

“Obviously the stereotype is going to be there,” he said. “The Giants guy in a club and gun shots go off. I understand all of that. I knew I did nothing wrong, I was there just to have a good time with friends and that was it. I knew I wasn’t doing anything negative.”

The 29-year-old Canty said this was the first time he had heard gunshots, other than when he has gone hunting.

“What goes through your mind?” he said incredulously. “You are scared. The first thing that goes through your mind is ‘get out and get home safely. That’s your first priority.”

Canty called the incident an unfortunate tragedy.

“You hate that something like that is still happening and that it can take place,” the seven-year veteran said. “It’s just the reality of the world we live in. My mom says this all the time: ‘The life you save may be your own.’ It’s surreal. It’s just something hard to accept that something like that can happen.”

Coach Tom Coughlin addressed the team about the incident after practice on Wednesday, adding he spoke to Cruz as a parent would speak to his son.

“I don’t know what good happens at 2:30 or 3 in the morning,” Coughlin said. “I’ve never been able to figure that one out. Beyond that is between he and I.”

Police say the gunman and victim had argued.

Artis Arthur, 43, was shot twice and killed. A 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were wounded and were in stable condition, police said.

Police were searching for the suspected gunman.

That’s all for today.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Giants owner John Mara was appointed chairman of the NFL Management Council, the league’s most powerful committee.

Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Thursday several changes to the leadership of league committees, with Mara replacing Panthers owner Jerry Richardson as head of the Management Council, which is the main NFL labor committee.

Goodell also has formed a committee on health and medical issues that will be chaired by 49ers owner John York. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Falcons President Rich McKay, Packers President Mark Murphy and Mara also will serve on that group, called the Health and Safety Advisory Committee.

There have been few significant changes to the committees in recent years due to labor and other issues.

“Our committee structure has been very important and beneficial to the NFL over the years,” Goodell said. “It has allowed us to address and study complex issues in depth and present our clubs with comprehensive information and thoughtful recommendations.”

Most notable is the creation of the health and safety unit as the league deals with increasing concerns about the health of current and former players, and the dangers of the sport.

“Player health and safety has been a key focus of the league for decades,” league spokesman Greg Aiello said. “An ownership level committee will support and oversee all of our work in this area that is critical to the future of the game.”

Other new committee chairmen are Texans owner Bob McNair (finance), Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver (investment), Steelers President Art Rooney (stadium), Chargers President Dean Spanos (business ventures), Bengals executive Katie Blackburn ( Super Bowl advisory), Chiefs owner Clark Hunt (international) and Jones (Hall of Fame).

“I’m honored that Commissioner Goodell has asked me to serve in this capacity,” McNair said. “The finance committee is one of the most important committees in the NFL. We have many challenges facing us in the future and I look forward to working with the commissioner and staff and other members of the committee as we do our financial planning to continue to be a successful enterprise going forward.

“Fortunately, I’ve been on the committee for a number of years and so I am familiar with its workings and so I don’t see there will be much of a transition to move from being a member of the committee to being the chairman.”

Stepping down as chairmen are Saints owner Tom Benson (finance), Broncos owner Pat Bowlen (labor), McNair (investment), Weaver (business ventures), Bears chairman Mike McCaskey (Super Bowl advisory and Hall of Fame), and York (international). Of course, McNair, Weaver and York are taking on similar duties with other committees.

Staying on as chairs are Patriots owner Robert Kraft (broadcast), McKay (competition), Falcons owner Arthur Blank (audit and compensation), Saints executive Rita LeBlanc (employee benefits), Cardinals President Michael Bidwill (stadium security and fan conduct), Jones (NFL Network), Patriots executive Jonathan Kraft and Redskins owner Dan Snyder (digital media), Colts owner Jim Irsay (legislative), and Blackburn (workplace diversity).

NEW YORK—This could be interesting. The Giants announced plans, starting with this Saturday’s pre-season matchup against their cross-town rival Jets, to display fans’ real-time tweets on freshly named MetLife Stadium’s video boards and other stadium distribution channels, as well as for those watching the live televised broadcast.

Does this mean gripes about penalties, play calls, and player miscues will be on display for everyone to see? Probably not, according to Communications Manager DeAndre Phillips, who said: “Essentially, there are filters set in place. If the tweet passes those filters, then they are put into a queue. A Giants employee reads through those tweets and approves which tweets will air. Think of it in terms of a live game broadcast with a slight time delay.”

This should be a game-changer.

The first-of-its-kind plan in the NFL is part of a larger social initiative, as the team has partnered with Mass Relevance to enhance the game atmosphere for Giants’ fans everywhere. In addition to airing the in-game tweets, fans will also be able to have a little halftime question-and-answer Twitter session with radio announcers Bob Papa and Carl Banks.

Finally, the Giants will tally tweets pertaining to the three preselected game MVP candidates (Twitter hash tags for each one are to be determined) for a specific time period during the game, and the player with the most tweets will have his online merchandise at the Giants store discounted for the following week.

How this will change the game-day experience remains to be seen, but either way, the New Meadowlands Stadium has changed.

What do you guys think about this.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The New York Giants could be without defensive end Osi Umenyiora for their season opener in September as he begins a three-to-four week recovery from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese said the two-time Pro Bowler, who hit the practice field this week despite a contract dispute, was bothered by swelling in his balky right knee after going hard in his return.

“After practicing for three days he had some swelling in the knee.” Reese told reporters. “Osi’s feeling is he wants to get it cleaned up now because he is looking forward to playing this season, and he wants to (play) without the knee being an issue for him.”

Umenyiora reported to training camp one day late and then stayed away from the practice field disgruntled by what he felt was a broken promise by the team to renegotiate his contract. He relented and went back to work in earnest on Monday.

The 29-year-old Umenyiora, who shared the team lead with 11.5 sacks last season, said it was better to have his knee cleaned up now rather than later.

“It was going to have to be done, the only question was when,” said Umenyiora. “If I’m going to miss a little while, I would prefer it be now than at the crucial part of our season. It’s the best decision for the team and myself.”

The Giants open their regular season against the Washington Redskins on September 11.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Disgruntled New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora hit the practice field Monday for the first time this abbreviated preseason, still unhappy over his contract but ready to join his team mates on the gridiron.

Umenyiora, a two-time Pro Bowl player, has been in training camp since last month but spent most of his time on a stationary bike, declining to take the practice field because he felt the team reneged on a promise to rework the contract paying him $7.1 million over the next two years.

The 29-year-old Umenyiora did not address reporters following Monday’s practice, but his coach and team mates were happy to see the pass-rushing defensive end back on the field.

“It was spirited and I thought the practice was very good,” coach Tom Coughlin told reporters. “He jumped right in there and tries to beat the ball like he normally does. It was good to see.

“He was very competitive.”

Coughlin said it was possible Umenyiora, who also has had concerns over a knee injury, might see some playing time in their preseason game Monday against the Chicago Bears and that he hoped the episode was behind them.

“I hope so and that’s all I am going on,” said Coughlin. “He is here and he wants to work. He wants to be a part of the team and we certainly want him to be.”

Umenyiora worked out with the first-team defense, splitting snaps at right end with young Jason Pierre-Paul, last year’s first-round draft pick who had two sacks and three tackles in a 20-10 preseason loss against the Carolina Panthers.

Fellow defensive lineman Justin Tuck said having Umenyiora back made the Giants better.

“Having the quality defensive ends we have, all of us make each other better,” said defensive captain Tuck.

“With him on the football field on Sundays, it makes it very difficult (for opponents to block). You’ve kind of got to pick and choose. Then you throw JPP (Pierre-Paul) in the mix, it really gives us a lot of freedom to do a lot of different things. So yeah, we definitely make each other better.”

Giants quarterback Eli Manning said getting past an internal controversy could only help.

“It is always good to have all your guys and everybody is practicing and back,” said Manning. “If you can eliminate distractions, that is always a positive.”

NEW YORK

Plaxico Burress is seriously considering a return to the New York Giants, an NFL source told the New York Post late Tuesday.

The source said the interest is mutual and Burress recognizes he would have to have a conversation with coach Tom Coughlin to repair the bridge he burned in a post-prison interview.

Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, who has developed a friendship with Burress, has called him, and so has Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Asked point-blank whether Burress has ruled out the Giants, the source said, “No,” before adding, “The Giants are a possibility.”

A report on nj.com stated Burress will meet Wednesday with Coughlin at the Giants’ practice facility. Burress, according to the report, said, “I really don’t know what I’m going to say. I’m just going to go in there and speak from the heart, be truthful with him and let him know how I feel. I’m pretty sure there are things he wants to say, too.”

Any conversation, though, will have to wait. The newly instituted rules of free agency prohibit any meetings with teams until Friday.

“If we are going to meet with Plaxico it won’t be until Friday, when such visits are permitted,” a Giants source said.

The source said the Giants are among a handful of teams that have expressed genuine interest, a list that includes the Eagles and Jets. The same source said the Giants reached out to Burress, who was in Florida, asking him to come in and chat.

No doubt any conversation with Coughlin would center on Burress’ hostile words in a post-prison interview on ESPN Radio in which he called his relationship with Coughlin “ambivalent, to say the least.”

Burress was fined numerous times and suspended more than once by Coughlin in his time with the Giants, punishments that Burress explained away as the result of a head coach who did not care about him as a person.

“I kind of felt it was like, ‘I’m the coach, you are the player, it doesn’t matter what you have to say, you just do what I tell you to do,’” Burress said in the interview. “This is not college. This is professional sports. If you can’t sit down and go talk to a man that you are busting your tail for, not even have the respect for anything that you have to say, the only thing I knew then was to rebel.”

The Giants viewed those words as evidence Burress did not leave prison — where he served a two-year sentence on gun charges — as truly changed in terms of taking responsibility for his actions while with the team.

NEW YORK (WFAN) – Last week, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs said there was “no chance” Plaxico Burress would return to New York once freed from prison on a gun charge.

The Philadelphia Eagles were thought to be the former Giants star’s preferred destination, an idea bolstered by the Phillies cap Burress donned upon his release.

How quickly things can change.

“You never know what may happen,” Burress told the Wall Street Journal in his first post-jail interview Friday. “I love New York. My fan base has always supported me there, and I’ve had teammates there who I’ve shared special moments with outside of football.”

Why the sudden change of heart? For starters, a report from The Associated Press on Wednesday stated “a person familiar with (the Eagles’) thinking (said) Burress isn’t in their plans.”

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and several other Eagles have said they’d welcome Burress to Philadelphia.

“Absolutely it would be a great addition for our team,” Vick told WIP radio last month. ” I think we can fit him in and make it work. Obviously the ultimate goal at the end of the day is to put that ring on your finger.”

Another New York team may look to make a play for Burress. The Jets, already linked to Randy Moss, could look to fill a need with the receiver if they lose Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards or Brad Smith to free agency.

Burress’ interview centered mainly on the nearly two years he spent in prison, time that the receiver said took an “emotional toll.”

“There is nothing pleasant about prison,” Burress said. “There’s so much I can tell you and (at the same time) no one thing I can put my finger on. … There were definitely some guys I was around who’d done things that made me say, ‘Really, seriously, I am here?’”

NEW YORK — Wide receiver Plaxico Burress becomes a free man on Monday when he is released from prison.

And according to good friend and former teammate Brandon Jacobs, Burress will not be returning to the New York Giants once the lockout ends.

“There is no chance Plaxico Burress is a New York Giant after he comes home,” Jacobs said while attending teammate Justin Tuck’s celebrity billiards event in Manhattan.

“He isn’t coming to the Giants,” Jacobs added. “He’s got options. I would love for him to be a part of the Giants. I don’t think that is even on his plate.”

Plaxico Burress’ road back to the NFL is set to begin Monday, when the star wideout is released from prison. Ian O’Connor wonders: Will the former Giant get a second chance? Story

Jacobs has placed the Philadelphia Eagles as the leading candidate to land Burress once football resumes because of Burress’ friendship with Michael Vick and the fact that the Eagles are loaded with talent offensively.

Both Vick and Burress grew up in the Virginia Beach area.

“I would hate to see him go to where I think he is going to go, that is from talking to him,” Jacobs said of the Eagles when asked if he was talking about Philadelphia. “It is pretty tough to deal with all those different combinations. Plax is a Virginia guy, Vick is a Virginia guy. They went through sort of the same things and they got a lot of dynamic players down there. It wouldn’t be a bad thing, he thinks, to go down there. He wants to win.”

Jacobs is one of Burress’ best friends and has remained in constant contact with the wide receiver, who accidentally shot himself in the thigh in November 2008. Burress pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He’s eligible for time off for good behavior, so his prison time will end Monday after serving 21 months of his two-year sentence.

Jacobs said he is “so sure” of Burress’ thinking “because I talk to him once a week.”

“He doesn’t think there is anything wrong with the organization,” Jacobs said of the Giants. “He just wants a new start.”

“I’m way excited for (him),” Jacobs added of Burress’ pending release. “He will get his opportunity. I am super happy for him and his family. His kids were over at my house a couple days ago. His wife seems super happy. It is a great thing for him to be coming home.”

Tuck, who hosted a celebrity billiards tournament to raise money for his R.U.S.H. for Literacy foundation, is one of several Giants who want Burress back. When asked if he will talk to general manager Jerry Reese and ownership about a Burress reunion once the lockout ends, Tuck said he will continue what he started before the lockout began.

“I’m already campaigning,” Tuck said prior to Jacobs’ comments about Burress being unlikely to return to the Giants. “I was campaigning before the lockout started. I will say this much, go back and see what our record was when he shot himself and how devastating our offense was. You had to take a safety out of the box (against him). With our O-line and our running game, that opens up a lot of stuff. I’m excited. I hope we can get No. 17 back to Giants Stadium.”

The Giants were 10-1 in 2008 before Burress shot himself that Nov. 28. The Giants made the postseason that year but have not been back since.

Tuck thinks the Giants and Burress make a lot of sense in 2011.

“I would think it is somewhere he would be comfortable, he knows everybody there and he knows the system,” said Tuck, who also is friends with Burress. “He had great chemistry with Eli (Manning) and he has a lot of friends on this team and a team that wants him here. I am sure there are going to be a lot of teams that will want him.”

“I can’t speak for Plaxico,” Tuck added. “He has a mind of his own and he knows what he wants to do. Coming from the captain of the New York Giants, I would love to have Plaxico back here in Giants blue.”

Jacobs would love to convince Burress to return to the Giants but the running back mentioned his own uncertain future. Jacobs is under contract for two more seasons and will earn $4.65 million in 2011 and $4.9 million in 2012.

The Giants also want to re-sign starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who will either be a restricted or unrestricted free agent. Keeping both running backs could be difficult if the Giants have to give Bradshaw a big contract.

“If I knew where I would be next year, if I knew for a fact that I would be around — no one knows anything now — I would be trying to talk (Burress) into it,” said Jacobs, who wants to return to the Giants and play with Bradshaw and Burress. “He wants to explore his options.”

With the NFL and its locked-out players mired in negotiations over a new labor agreement, the league on Tuesday announced its 2011-12 schedule — assuming the season starts on time.

The regular season kicks off Thursday night, Sept. 8, when the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers host the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field.

The first Sunday features several high-profile games, including Indianapolis at Houston and Atlanta at Chicago. But much of the national focus will be on Washington and New York, the two cities most affected by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

“That stadium is going to be full of emotion, not only the people from the area but in the entire country,” said Jets coach Rex Ryan, who will be matching wits with his brother, Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. “The fact that it’s the 10th anniversary of 9/11, that’s where the focus should be, not me playing against my brother.”

The Redskins and Giants kick off at 4:15 p.m., with the Jets and Cowboys at 8:20 p.m.

“For nearly 10 years, we have felt an obligation to use our platform to make sure none of us ever forget the tragedy and heartbreak and courage and heroism of Sept. 11,” Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said. “That responsibility becomes even greater.”

Pittsburgh was the third NFL city most closely affected by the terrorist attacks after Flight 93 crashed 80 miles away near Shanksville, Pa. The Steelers will visit the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 11.

New England travels to Miami and Oakland visits Denver for the opening Monday night.

The final Sunday of the regular season falls on New Year’s Day, when all 16 scheduled games are between division rivals, enhancing the potential for playoff ramifications.

The regular season covers 17 weeks, with the opening round of the playoffs scheduled for Jan. 7-8 and the Super Bowl on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis.

The NFL has expressed a desire to stretch the season to 18 games, one of the sticking points in the contentious fight between owners and players over a new labor agreement.

The two sides resumed court-ordered mediation on Tuesday in Minneapolis, with a federal judge’s decision expected soon on a request to immediately halt the lockout.

The two sides spent 16 days immersed in mediated talks in Washington without coming to an agreement, resulting in a class-action antitrust lawsuit filed by the players against the NFL and the league’s first work stoppage since 1987. They’ve recently spent about 20 hours over three days meeting in Minneapolis, with more discussions planned for Wednesday.

In a statement announcing next season’s schedule, the NFL did not provide any contingencies should negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement stretch into the fall.

“I’m confident we will have a season,” Rex Ryan said Tuesday night. “We’re going to be ready to play. Whenever they say, ‘OK, we’re going back to work,’ we’ll be ready to play.”

Among the other highlights of the schedule, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host the Chicago Bears at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 23, one of two games outside the United States and the fifth consecutive year the NFL has played a regular-season game in London.

The Bucs lost to the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium in 2009, while the Bears will be marking the 25th anniversary of their preseason game against the Cowboys in London.

The Buffalo Bills will play a game in Canada for the fourth consecutive season when they host the Redskins at the Rogers Centre on Oct. 30 in Toronto. The Bills have a deal with Rogers Communications through 2012 to play five regular-season games in Canada’s largest city.

The Thanksgiving Day games include the Packers at Detroit, Miami at Dallas and San Francisco at Baltimore, when new 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh faces the Ravens and coach John Harbaugh in the first meeting between sibling head coaches in NFL history.

The Packers play the Bears in the only game on Christmas Day. There are 13 games scheduled for Dec. 24, including the Giants against the Jets.

The NFL will again use “flexible scheduling” for Weeks 10-15 and the final week of the regular season, allowing the league to move the start times for select games.
