Giants coach Tom Coughlin says PK Tynes status…

“I’m not going to predict how long he’ll be out,” Coughlin said. “He’ll be a fulltime participant in the training room. That’s for sure.”

Coughlin was not sure whether the Giants would sign a kicker this week but it seems unlikely that Tynes will be able to play a week from Monday against Chicago. He was on crutches after the game, the result of being run into on a blocked second-half field goal.

“We have one solid option if we decide not to do that, but if we decide (that) then it will be relatively early in the week, obviously,” said Coughlin, who indicated he didn’t want to burden punter Matt Dodge with kickoff duties because the second-year player is competing with Steve Weatherofrd for a job.

The update on Tynes came a little more than an hour before Umenyiora told The Associated Press that he will return to work on Monday despite not getting a new contract.

Umenyiora said the Giants offered to put incentives in his deal, which will pay him $7.1 million over the next two seasons, but he rejected them.

“No deal has been reworked,” Umenyiora told the AP. “What has been offered has been unacceptable and shows they don’t really respect the fact I sacrifice my health for the franchise. I will play under my current deal because I love and respect my coaches, my teammates, the fans, and myself. Not for those incentives.”

The nine-year NFL veteran hasn’t practiced since reporting to training camp on July 30, a day late. He failed to report on time because he alleged that general manager Jerry Reese told him after last season that the team would rework his contract.

The 29-year-old Umenyiora shared the team lead with 11.5 sacks last season and he had a league-high 10 forced fumbles.

The return of Umenyiora comes two days after second-year pro Jason Pierre-Paul recorded two sacks and played well filling in at right end for Umenyiora.

“JPP obviously played well,” Coughlin said. “He was a force with two sacks and he missed another one. He made some tackles and was a force against a good left tackle, so I was pleased with the way he played.”

For the most part, Coughlin was disappointed in the Giants’ play, particularly on offense. The unit failed to register a touchdown, and Tynes missed three field goals. One was blocked and another just missed from 56 yards.

While the defense played well, it gave up a couple of big plays and there were way too many missed tackles on defense and special teams.

Coughlin said the team lacked a sense of urgency in its preseason opener. Linebacker Michael Boley gave New York a 7-0 lead with an interception return, but didn’t build on it.

“You’re up 7-0, why can’t it be 14-0?” Coughlin said. “Why isn’t it 10-0. The ability to recognize and capitalize on the circumstance as it presents itself to you. That’s more of what I’m talking about. There was energy. There was effort. There is a ton of people playing in their first professional game. You don’t think they were excited and a lot of times they don’t really know how to express themselves or even express it in a team way. That’s what I’m after.”

With no games until Monday, Coughlin believes this week will be an important time for the team to focus, communicate and to start executing.

Coughlin feels new center David Baas is going to be good once he gets settled. He said that Will Beatty played well at left tackle, and that second-year defensive tackle Linval Joseph can be a force in the middle. He was impressed by Domenik Hixon’s first game in more than a year since a major knee injury.

Giants PK Tynes has bruised thigh will be limited

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—The New York Giants might be welcoming more
than Osi Umenyiora(notes) to training camp on Monday. They could be getting a new
kicker, too.

Lawrence Tynes(notes) bruised his right thigh in Saturday night’s preseason loss to
the Carolina Panthers, and coach Tom Coughlin said Sunday that the veteran
kicker will be spending a lot of time with the team’s medical personnel this
week.

“I’m not going to predict how long he’ll be out,” Coughlin said. “He’ll be a
fulltime participant in the training room. That’s for sure.”

Aug 3, 2011 – Disgruntled defensive end Osi Umenyiora is still a member of the New York Giants this afternoon. Like it or not, it looks like Umenyiora will be a Giant for a while. The team today told Umenyiora’s agent, Tony Agnone, that the window for him to seek a trade for Umenyiora is now closed.

Agnone was unsuccessful in convincing any other team to meet the Giants price, a first-round draft pick, and commit to giving Umenyiora the rich new contract he seeks. The New York Post reported that the sides will meet this afternoon to discuss what happens now.

Umenyiora held out the first day of training camp, but has been in attendance every day since. He has not yet worked out, however, either standing on the sidelines or riding a stationary bike.

The Baltimore Ravens may have been the team that most aggressively sought Umenyiora, though several teams had at least some interest. What happens now is anyone’s guess.

NEW YORK GIANTS: After one day, Osi Umenyiora ends…

EAST RUTHERFORD — Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora has ended his holdout after a day and reported to the Giants.

Umenyiora reported to training camp yesterday afternoon after missing the opening day of training camp at the team’s headquarters.

The 29-year-old failed to report Friday. He said during the summer that he was unhappy with the team because general manager Jerry Reese failed to live up to a promise to renegotiate his contact after last season.

“I’ll be there today,” Umenyiora said in a email to The Associated Press around 3:20 p.m. Saturday.

Neither Umenyiora nor Reese was immediately available for comment after the player reported around 4 p.m.

Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and led the league with 10 forced fumbles. His 11½ sacks tied Justin Tuck for the team lead.

Tuck hinted earlier in the day that Umenyiora might return soon.

“I think he realizes this is a business and he’s doing what’s best for him. You can’t blame him for that,” Tuck said. “A lot of people have different opinions on how to handle the situation. You might not see eye-to-eye with how he handled it. He has to do what’s best for him. That’s all I tell him to do. My biggest concern is that he doesn’t do something that’s going to hurt Osi.”

Umenyiora ripped Reese in an affidavit filed by players as part of an antitrust suit against the league during the recent lockout.

Tuck felt the comments would not be a problem. Continued…

“A couple years ago Michael Strahan was in a similar situation,” Tuck said. “He might’ve had a little bit more (leverage) being a future Hall of Famer. You’ve got to understand, we just got out of a tremendous business deal with just being able to come out here and play this game again. It is a business.

“I think a lot of people get caught up in the loyalty to the game and things of that nature like the Giants in this situation. We’re definitely loyal to the team. But, in Osi’s situation, he feels as though he needs to do this.”

Jul 30, 2011 – New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora is expected to end his one day holdout and report to the team’s training camp Saturday night, a development first reported by Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger. Umenyiora is unhappy with hsi contract, wanting the Giants to re-negotiate a deal that has two years remaining.

Question is, will Umenyiora be arriving at the Timex Performance Center as a happy camper, or as a player who will create a scene the way former Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey did before the 2008 season, basically forcing his way out of town?

If you believe what Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News tweeted, it would be the latter. Here is what Vacchiano said:

Source says he [Umenyiora] has no plans to speak to GM Jerry Reese “ever again” and still wants a new contract or a trade.

Ouch! That does not sound like a player who will show up happy to be a Giant. Umenyiora, of course, filed a sworn affadavit as part of the Brady anti-trust lawsuit claiming that Reese had lied to him about his contract status.

Giants defensive captain Justin Tuck said he spoke to Umenyiora Saturday morning and that “he’s doing what’s best for him.” Tuck said he did not believe the relationship between Umenyiora and the Giants was fractured beyond repair.

“We’ve all seen worse, worse than this situation between Osi and the New York Giants. A couple years ago Michael Strahan was in a similar situation. He might’ve had a little bit more (leverage?) being a future hall-of-famer,” said Tuck. “You’ve got to understand, we just got out of a tremendous business deal with just being able to come out here and play this game again. It is a business. I think a lot of people get caught up in the loyalty to the game and things of that nature like the Giants in this situation. We’re definitely loyal to the team. But, in Osi’s situation, he feels as though he needs to do this. Who am I to say he’s wrong for doing it?”

Stay tuned to this one. Might be some fireworks in store.

Burress fit, ready to return to NFL

Published: Feb. 14, 2011 at 12:07 PM

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 14 (UPI) — Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will be released from prison in June and he is ready to return to the NFL, his agent said.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus visited Burress over the weekend and wrote on his Twitter account that Burress “looks in terrific shape,” the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot reported Monday.

Burress is serving a two-year prison term for a weapons violation. He has also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“He is in great spirits and is excited to be reunited with his family on June 6th,” Rosenhaus wrote. “We talked at length about his future in the NFL & he can’t wait to get back on the football field in 2011! He is mentally & physically strong right now and is looking forward to the future!”

Former Steelers teammate Hines Ward said Burress would be welcomed back to Pittsburgh, and former Giants teammates Eli Manning and Osi Umenyiora said they support their former teammate.

“He looks great. He is lean; he is in good shape,” said Umenyiora, who has also visited Burress in prison. “He’s focused and he seems happy. I just can’t wait for him to come out and I think he is going to have a great impact a la Michael Vick.”

The Giants haven’t been the same team without Burress, Umenyiora said.

“If you look at our team before, when Plaxico was in, if you look after he’s gone, even though we have had some success and even though we have played pretty well, it just hasn’t been the same without him,” Umenyiora said in an ESPN interview.

That’s all the news for today.

The source confirmed a report by the Newark Star Ledger that the New York Giants defensive end had the surgery to alleviate pain that was related to a torn labrum injury he suffered back in 2006.

Umenyiora may need three months of recovery time, according to the report. Of course, there could be a work stoppage with a new collective bargaining agreement needing to be worked out so Umenyiora potentially might not miss much if there is even an offseason workout program this year.

Umenyiora had 11.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles despite playing through pain in his hip and knees all season long.

Umenyiora’s expected recovery time is three months. The paper said he might be limited in offseason workouts and team activities.

In August, Umenyiora visited doctor Marc Philippon, the Star-Ledger said, but decided to play through the injury. He went on to tally 11 ½ sacks and an NFL record-tying 10 forced fumbles.

NFL Giants’ Osi Umenyiora Has Successful Hip Surgery, Star-Ledger Says

New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora underwent “very successful” hip surgery, according to Star-Ledger.com.

Umenyiora, 30, had the procedure yesterday to repair side effects from a torn labrum he sustained in 2006, the newspaper said on its website, citing an anonymous person informed of the procedure.

An e-mail message seeking comment from Pat Hanlon, a spokesman for the Giants, wasn’t immediately returned.

Recovery is expected to take three months and Umenyiora might be limited in organized team activities if there is no work stoppage because of the labor dispute between the National Football League and its players’ union, the Star-Ledger said.

Umenyiora, a first-team All-Pro in 2005, had 11 1/2 sacks and 10 forced fumbles this season for the Giants, who went 10-6 and missed the playoffs.

Giants DE Umenyiora reportedly undergoes hip surgery

New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora had hip surgery on Monday, The Newark Star-Ledger reported Tuesday, citing someone informed of the procedure.

The source told The Star-Ledger that Umenyiora had “very successful” surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York by orthopedic surgeon Brian Kelly.

Umenyiora is expected to recover in three months from the operation, which was prompted by the effects from a torn labrum he sustained in 2006.

The defensive end, 29, forced an NFL record-tying 10 fumbles and had 11.5 sacks for the Giants (10-6), who were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season.

New York Giants’ defense remembers just how close it came to stopping Eagles last time

By GEORGE O’GORMAN
Staff Writer

EAST RUTHERFORD — Osi Umenyiora came within an inch or two of making the defensive play that might have won the Giants their last meeting with the Eagles.

“I don’t think about it,” the Giants defensive end says. “Sometimes you make those plays and sometimes you don’t. That was a situation I wasn’t able to make the play.”

That fourth quarter play at The Linc back on Nov. 21 when Andy Reid gambled on 4th-and-1 at the 50 and had Michael Vick toss the ball over Umenyiora’s reach to LeSean McCoy turned into a heartbreaker for the G-Men.

It resulted in eight points — a TD and 2-point conversion — that rallied the Eagles from a 17-16 deficit to a 24-17 lead and a win that put them alone atop the NFC East race – for one week.

They lost the next Sunday in Chicago while the Giants were beating Jacksonville to start a 3-game win streak that now finds them tied for first in the division heading into another classic Eagles/Giants showdown.

It kicks off at 1 p.m. today (FOX Channels 5-29) with the winner going a game up in the NFC East race with two weeks to go in the regular-season.

The Eagles have won five in a row over the G-Men, with three of the five coming at old Giants Stadium where Philly had a history of handing Big Blue many hard-to-swallow losses.

Today they meet for the first time in new Meadowlands Stadium where Tom Coughlin’s team wants to make the Eagles’ first appearance there one that could spoil their hopes of starting a late-season run that will get them to the Super Bowl in the 50th anniversary season of their only world championship.

Containing Eagles QB Michael Vick better than they did last month is key to a Giant win. They kept Vick in the pocket that night as he gained only 34 yards on 11 runs, with the longest going for nine yards and a TD. But he eluded a strong pass rush to complete 24 of 38 passes for 258 yards to earn his second win in three career starts against the Giants.

The Giants promise they will be attack him with the same plan coordinator Perry Fewell used last month, but with a few new wrinkles. Continued…

“We’re going to adjust some of the things we did, and they’re going to adjust some of the things they did also,” Umenyiora says. “We’re going to do some different things. We did give up a lot of yards, and we don’t want to give up that many this time.”

Jeremy Macklin caught nine balls for 120 yards and DeSean Jackson five for 50, while LeSean “Shady” McCoy was 14-for-111 with his longest the one that Umenyiora almost prevented.

“I was frustrated because I thought we should have won and we gave them the last game,” says Umenyiora. “I know how tough it is to win in this league and you don’t want to give anyone the game, and that’s what we did. Hopefully, if we limit a lot of the mistakes we made last time, we’ll be alright.

“That was a game we shouldn’t have lost, but we did. We get them back on home turf this time and hopefully it’s different.”

“We win this game and hopefully we win the NFC East, but you never know because we’ll still have two games left (at Green Bay and Washington),” says cornerback Terrell Thomas.

“We’re a healthier team now, and not on a losing streak. After all the adversity we had in getting to play last week against the Vikings we’re a hungrier team. We showed our mental toughness last week, and we know this is our season on the line,” said Thomas. “We’re surging at the right time and getting healthy.”

The Giants defense doesn’t anticipate Reid will make a major overhaul in his game plan and run more so Vick isn’t in the pocket trying to avoid the rush waiting for receivers to get open.

“That’s not their game. What they do, they do it well and they’ve done it well for a number of years,” Umenyiora says.

“ If he tries to do that, he’s going to be getting away from his game plan and it might come back to bite him. I think he’s going to stick to what he does and what they’ve been successful with.”

Umenyiora hopes he and Justin Tuck at the other defensive end spot can overpower their blockers and double-team Vick. And should be try to run inside they believe Barry Cofield. Chris Canty and even rookie Jason Pierre-Paul can stop him. Continued…

“You just have to take your shot at him. I think most people try to play a little tentative when they’re playing against him. We have the option that everybody will cover, so hopefully if you take a shot and miss, your friends back there will be able to recover,” said Umenyiora.

The Giants realize Vick may have more weapons at his disposal than they can shut down effectively.

The Eagles that, too. Especially ‘Shady’ McCoy.

“He’s an awesome player, but it comes to DeSean, myself and Maclin,” says McCoy. “Just call us his weapons.”

“He’s the big gun and we’re his weapons with DeSean and Maclin’s big play capability and so much speed. Throw in Celek and Avant, guys that are kind of sure.

“You can count on them. They are all clutch players along with myself and help Mike out,” added Jackson. “Like they say we’re a young group and definitely playing big lately.”

The Giants realize that, but expect to have the defensive scheme to derail the NFC’s most productive offense today.
