FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Plaxico Burress had some of his most memorable moments with the New York Giants. From his Super Bowl-winning catch to his clashes with Tom Coughlin, there’s plenty of history there.

Now a member of the Jets, Burress is on the other side of the New York-area rivalry, with lots on the line Saturday for both teams. And the wide receiver intends to have a big game against his former teammates.

He says Wednesday that he wants to score “once, twice, maybe three or four times” on Saturday and is “going to go out and try to play lights-out football.”

Burress adds a bit of a playful prediction, saying that the loser of the game will “wake up with a bittersweet Christmas, and it’s not going to be me.”

The NFL schedule says one thing. But for the New York Giants, reality says something else. "Our playoffs start now," guard Chris Snee said this week, according to the New York Daily News

The NFL schedule says one thing. But for the New York Giants, reality says something else.

“Our playoffs start now,” guard Chris Snee said this week, according to the New York Daily News. “That’s how we look at it. We know what’s at stake.”

Heading into Sunday night’s game at Dallas, the Giants have lost four in a row, but they’re coming off a confidence-builder against Green Bay, a 38-35 loss to the NFL’s only undefeated team.

“The mind-set is looking ahead,” quarterback Eli Manning said. “It doesn’t matter what you’ve done last week or what your record is. It’s what you’re playing for, who you have this week. And you have Dallas, Sunday night football, that’s a big one.”

If the Giants win, they’re back in first place and control their own destiny. If they lose, Dallas will not only be two games ahead with three to play but will own all of the tiebreakers.

The Cowboys had won four in a row coming into last Sunday’s game against Arizona, and with a win would have been able to clinch the NFC East this weekend. Instead, Dallas lost to the Cardinals, and the division race is still very much up in the air.

NBC’s Cris Collinsworth thinks this situation could be reminiscent of the Giants’ big run four years ago, when they played New England very tough in a season finale — nearly denying the Patriots their undefeated regular season — then caught fire in the playoffs, carrying that all the way through to a Super Bowl victory.

“That Patriots game changed the Giants,” he said. “Whatever it was that they found that day they kept, and they rolled right through to the Super Bowl. You just wonder if that very similar game last week against the Packers — the Giants don’t win it, but here they take this undefeated team right to the wire — is that going to be the one that the Giants look back on?

“If that sort of thing happens, you can almost hear the comparisons.”

The stadium was rocking, and the possibilities for the New York
Giants were delicious.

They’d just tied the Green Bay Packers _ yes, the undefeated,
defending champion Packers _ with 58 seconds remaining Sunday
night. Their only competition for the NFC East title, the Cowboys,
had lost at Arizona.

A Giants victory would erase their deficit behind Dallas, and
would snap Green Bay’s winning streak at 17, 11 this season. Just
stop Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ dynamic offense, get the game
to overtime, and perhaps pull off a season-defining win.

Instead, Rodgers marched his team 68 yards in five plays, Mason
Crosby kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired, and the Packers
won 38-35, clinching a playoff berth.

“When you get a chance to knock out the champ, you got to knock
him out,” defensive end Justin Tuck said. “You can’t let them hang
around and fight off the ropes.

“You’ve got to knock him out. There’s a reason they’ve won 18
straight.”

And there are lots of reasons the Giants (6-6) have lost four in
a row, from inconsistent offense to a porous secondary to a
difficult schedule that doesn’t get any easier with a trip to
Dallas next Sunday _ and concludes on New Year’s Day with the
Cowboys at the Meadowlands.

Still, one game in back of the Cowboys and having pushed the
Packers (12-0) to the limit, the Giants shouldn’t be hanging their
heads.

“A loss is a loss, no matter how it comes. It’s just a better
feeling than the previous one (Saints),” Tuck said, referring to a
49-24 rout in New Orleans last Monday night. “As long as we play
with passion, I don’t see why we can’t be in the playoffs. But
we’ve got a lot of work to do before we talk about that. I’m sick
to my stomach, but a win takes all that away. I just hope all my
teammates feel the same way.”

Eli Manning does.

“We did some really good things, and they’re the best team in
football right now,” Manning said. “I think we have to try to take
something from this game, take some momentum into these next
games.”

Coincidentally, New York fell 38-35 to unbeaten New England in
2007 season finale, then beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

“Hopefully, we can take that same approach,” Manning said.

Rodgers hit three passes of more than 18 yards on the drive in
the final 58 seconds. That came after New York tied the game on Eli
Manning’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Hakeem Nicks and a 2-point
conversion run by D.J. Ware.

However, Rodgers, who threw four touchdown passes, wasn’t going
to settle for overtime after a touchback on the ensuing
kickoff.

On first down, he hit Jermichael Finley just over the
outstretched hands of rookie linebacker Jacquian Williams and the
tight end rumbled 24 yards up the right sideline.

A 24-yard pass to Jordy Nelson down the left sideline moved the
ball to the New York 29. An 18-yard pass to Greg Jennings two plays
later got the ball to the 12.

Green Bay called time out with 3 seconds to go, and Crosby
delivered.

Rodgers, who was harassed by the Giants’ front and sacked three
times, finished 28 of 46 for 369 yards. He threw touchdown passes
of 7 and 13 yards to Donald Driver, 20 to Jennings and 12 to
Finley.

Linebacker Clay Matthews also returned an interception 38 yards
for a score in the second quarter.

Manning finished 23 of 40 for 347 yards. He had an early 67-yard
touchdown pass to Travis Beckum and touchdown tosses of 4 and 2
yards to Nicks. Brandon Jacobs scored on a 1-yard run after a rare
interception of Rodgers, and Lawrence Tynes kicked two field goals,
with a 50-yarder in the fourth quarter getting New York within
28-27.

Rodgers hooked up with Driver on a 7-yard TD with 3:34 to go to
push the lead to 35-27.

However, Manning hit tight end Jake Ballard on two 15-yard
passes and connected with Victor Cruz for 22 yards to set up the
tying score that New York thought would send the game to OT.

Rodgers had other ideas, and the Packers continued their run at
trying to match Miami’s perfect season in 1972.

It’s not surprising New York gave them a game. The Giants ended
the Denver Broncos’ perfect season at 11 games in 1998 and they
knocked off the Patriots in the Super Bowl in February 2008 when
Tom Brady and company were a game from perfection.

The Giants let the Packers know early they were going to be in
for a battle this week.

Manning and Beckum, who had one catch all season, combined on a
67-yard catch and weaving run on the third play of the game.

Rodgers tied the game with a 12-yard TD pass to Finley on Green
Bay’s second possession, only to see New York take the lead on a
38-yard field goal by Tynes.

New York seemed to be in control until Manning made a mistake on
a play-action pass on the first play of the second quarter. With
his primary receiver covered, Manning threw a sideline pass to
Ahmad Bradshaw in front of the Packers bench. Matthews jumped the
route and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown and a 14-10
lead.

Rodgers had been intercepted four times all season, but
linebacker Chase Blackburn, signed on Wednesday, picked him off at
the Green Bay 21 and returned the ball to the 12. Two plays later,
Brandon Jacobs plowed in from the 1 to give New York a 17-14
edge.

Rodgers atoned for the error on the next series, driving the
Packers 80 yards in 11 plays with the biggest play an 11-yard
scramble on third-and-10 from the New York 43. Rodgers capped the
march with a 13-yard, third-down touchdown pass to a wide-open
Donald Driver.

Rodgers pushed the lead to 28-17 on the opening series of the
second half with his fist TD pass to Driver, but Manning got New
York back in the game later in the quarter with his first TD to
Nicks.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – The Green Bay Packers are still perfect and heading to the playoffs.

Aaron Rodgers engineered a last minute drive to set up a 30-yard field goal by Mason Crosby on the final play and the Green Bay Packers remained undefeated and clinched a playoff berth with a 38-35 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday.

Rodgers hit three passes of more than 18 yards on the drive in the final 58 seconds as the Super Bowl champion Packers (12-0) won their 18th straight game and handed the Giants (6-6) their fourth straight loss.

New York, which was blown out by New Orleans Monday night, tied the game on a 2-yard Eli Manning touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion run by D.J. In Week 15 of 1998, the Giants hosted and beat a 13-0 Denver Broncos squad on
the way to finishing 8-8 and missing the NFC Playoffs. The Broncos, meanwhile,
went on to capture the Super Bowl anyway in what wound up being John Elways
final season.

And in Super Bowl XLII to conclude the 2007 season, New York encountered an
18-0 New England Patriots team on the verge of joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins
as the only perfect world champions in NFL history — and instead claimed the
glory for itself with a stunning 17-14 win.

So when the 11-0 Green Bay Packers arrive Sunday at MetLife Stadium for their
Week 13 showdown, Big Blue will know whats at stake.

The question still remains, however: Do they have enough of anything needed to
slay this unblemished dragon?

“It is a different circumstance when we played [the Patriots in the Super
Bowl], but it is the challenge of playing a team that is obviously a very good
football team,” Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said. “That part is consistent.”

Led by Aaron Rodgers’ 33 touchdown passes against just four interceptions,
Green Bay is five games from a perfect regular season and already installed as
a heavy favorite to repeat last season’s Super Bowl win. A victory on Sunday,
in fact, could clinch the NFC North with four games remaining.

“The most important mindset that we have as a football team is staying in touch
with reality, and the reality is we have to go to New York and beat the
Giants,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “That’s a challenge. That’s a
tough place to play. They’re a physical football team.”

The Packers have won 17 straight contests dating back to last season, four shy
of the playoff-inclusive mark set by the Patriots between 2003-04.

“It is motivating to go out every week and compete better than you did the
previous,” Rodgers said. “We have been able to play the way we wanted to play
consistently the first 11 games. We will see what happens when we get down this
road a little bit.”

Green Bay’s streak began with a 45-17 home rout of the Giants in the next-to-
last week of the 2010 regular season. New York would have clinched a playoff
spot and eliminated Green Bay with a victory.

Instead, the Giants missed the playoffs for a second straight year and seem to
be traveling a similar path in 2011. They have lost three straight and have a
short week after allowing 577 yards — the second-most in franchise history –
in Monday’s 49-24 loss at New Orleans.

Now 6-5, New York is a game behind Dallas in the NFC East.

“We will bounce back and that is the thing I believe in,” Coughlin said. “That
is what we preach. It is a time for us to be bold and not sit back and listen
to what all of you are saying. Rather, just to come out fighting and that is
the position we will take.”

The high-intensity pass rush that dogged Tom Brady in the aforementioned title
win could be hampered against Rodgers and Co. this week, with two-time Pro Bowl
defensive end Osi Umenyiora expected to miss the game — and maybe several more
— with a severe ankle sprain.

Rodgers threw for 404 yards and four scores in last season’s defeat of New
York.

“We just executed really well,” Rodgers said of that game. “We started off with
the 80-yard touchdown to [wide receiver] Jordy Nelson and we were just able to
make the plays that we needed to make.”

On their side, the Giants own the NFL’s worst rushing attack in yards per game
(82.3) and yards per carry (3.2), but could get help if running back Ahmad
Bradshaw returns after missing four games with a broken bone in his right foot.
New York hasn’t scored a first-half touchdown since Bradshaw went down.

“That is something that we have to fix,” Giants quarterback Eli Manning said.
“We have to find ways to get down there and get touchdowns.”

SERIES HISTORY

Green Bay took a 26-21-2 lead in a regular-season series with the Giants that
dates back to 1928 with last year’s previously-mentioned pasting and has won
two straight and five of the past six non-playoff meetings between the storied
franchises. The Packers have also come out on top in three straight tests as
the visitor in this set, claiming victories at Giants Stadium in both 1998 and
2001 in addition to a 35-13 triumph in 2007. New York last topped the Packers
in the regular season via a 14-7 verdict at Lambeau Field in 2004, and its last
home win over Green Bay occurred on Nov. 8, 1992, a 27-7 decision.

These two teams have also squared off a total of six times during postseason
play, with the most recent clash taking place in the 2007 NFC Championship. The
Giants won that game in overtime by a 23-20 count at Lambeau Field in what
turned out to be Brett Favre’s final appearance as a Packer. Green Bay and New
York battled for the league championship in 1928, 1929, 1944 and 1961, with the
Packers taking all but the first of those title games, and delivered a 16-7 win
in a rematch of the NFL Championship Game held at Yankee Stadium in 1962 as
well.

Coughlin is 2-4 against the Packers during his head coaching career, including
an 0-2 mark while with Jacksonville from 1995 to 2002. McCarthy is 2-1 against
both Coughlin and the Giants over his six-year tenure with the Pack, with the
lone defeat coming in the above-noted 2007 NFC Championship.

WHEN THE PACKERS HAVE THE BALL

Rodgers is the first player in NFL history to post a 100-plus rating in 11
straight games. He also has a 110-plus rating in 19 of his past 22 contests
(including postseason) and has thrown for two-plus scoring passes in each of
his first 11 games this year, the third-longest streak to begin a season. In
last year’s meeting with the Giants, he completed 25-of-37 throws (67.6
percent) for 404 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 139.9 rating.
Fullback John Kuhn scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) in that
contest. Since the start of 2007, wide receiver Greg Jennings has 50 receiving
touchdowns including the postseason, third-most in the NFL. He had seven
catches for 142 yards in the teams’ last meeting. Nelson has five receiving
touchdowns in his past four games and had four catches for 124 yards, including
the 80-yard touchdown, in last December’s victory over the Giants. Wide
receiver James Jones had three catches for 94 yards and a 65-yard touchdown in
the Packers’ 25-17 win at Detroit on Thanksgiving.

On defense, the Giants have won 20 of their last 24 games (including playoffs)
when end Justin Tuck has a sack. He aims for a third game in row against Green
Bay with a sack this week. Second-year end Jason Pierre-Paul has 15 sacks in
his last 17 games, meanwhile. Cornerback Corey Webster has four interceptions
in his past six meetings with Green Bay and picked off Favre in overtime to set
up the winning field goal in the 2007 NFC Championship.

Statistically speaking, Green Bay’s offense is first in scoring (34.7 ppg),
fourth in total yards (401.7 ypg), third in passing (304.1 ypg) and 28th in
rushing (97.2 ypg). On defense, the Giants are 27th in points allowed (25.2
ppg), 28th in yards allowed (381.6 ypg), 26th against the pass (251.2 ypg) and
24th against the run (130.5 ypg).

WHEN THE GIANTS HAVE THE BALL

Manning (3358 passing yards, 20 TD) is the fifth quarterback in NFL history
with seven consecutive seasons with 3,000-plus passing yards and 20 or more
touchdown throws and leads the NFL with a 123.7 rating in the fourth quarter
this season. Running backs Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs each had a rushing
touchdown in the 2007 NFC title game against the Packers and including the
postseason, the Giants are 11-1 when Jacobs starts and has 21-plus attempts.
Reserve running back D.J. Ware had a career-high eight catches in Monday’s loss
to the Saints, while wide receiver Victor Cruz had a career-best nine grabs for
157 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He aims for a third week in a row
with six-plus catches, 125-plus receiving yards and a touchdown and has
accumulated 80 yards or more in eight of his past nine games. Fellow wide
receiver Mario Manningham had four catches for 132 yards (33.0 avg.) and an 85-
yard touchdown in the teams’ last meeting, but is questionable to play this
week with a knee injury. Counterpart Hakeem Nicks had four catches for 93 yards
(23.3 avg.) and a touchdown in last December’s loss to the Packers.

On the Green Bay defense, cornerback Charles Woodson had an interception last
week and has 36 picks since joining Green Bay in 2006, second-most in the NFL
over that span. His nine interception returns for scores during that stretch
are tops in the league as well. Opposite-side starter Tramon Williams had an
interception in last year’s win against the Giants and has four pick, including
one returned for a touchdown, in his last four games. Linebacker Clay Matthews
had an interception last week and nose tackle B.J. Raji had a sack in the
teams’ last meeting.

By the numbers, New York on offense is 17th in scoring (22.9 ppg), 11th in
total yards (373.7 ypg), fourth in passing (291.5 ypg) and dead last in rushing
(82.3 ypg). On defense, the Packers are 14th in scoring (20.6 ppg), 30th in
yards allowed (393.4 ypg), second-to-last against the pass (287.8 ypg) and 13th
against the run (105.5 ypg).

KEYS TO THE GAME

Whether Bradshaw will play, or is healthy enough to fully contribute, will go a
long way to determining if the Giants can attempt to control the flow with a
consistent ground game against an iffy run defense.

On the other side, going without Umenyiora deals a significant blow to the sort
of disrupt-the-passer scheme that served New York so well in the Super Bowl
with Brady and his prolific offense. The Giants have to apply steady pressure
on Rodgers if they’re to accomplish the difficult task of getting him out of
rhythm.

At some point, it usually gets difficult for a team to maintain momentum.
Although not probable, it could be a challenge for the Packers to re-ignite
after an extended post-Thanksgiving break.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

Yes, the Giants have been doubted in spots similar to this. And yes, they’ve at
least two times delivered an upset against a previously unblemished team. But
it doesn’t seem the same this time. Though they’ll be the home team and surely
amped up, this New York squad is suffering from too many injuries and too much
defensive upheaval to be counted on to stop the league’s best team. Unless
Rodgers has an uncharacteristic bad day and/or the weather makes an impact, it
looks like a dozen wins in a row for Green Bay this season.

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking pretty far up at the New York Giants right now in the NFC East.

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking pretty far up at the New York Giants right now in the NFC East. The only thing that Eagles fans like myself have to hope for is that the 6-2 Giants collapse under a very tough schedule – even though some Philadelphia wins will be needed as well.

New York seemed more likely to collapse against tougher competition before it rallied over the New England Patriots on Nov. 6. Although there are still question marks around the Giants and Eli Manning(notes), coach Tom Coughlin has once again put them in a position to do damage – despite not being the nicest guy around.

In fact, a new survey from the Sporting News on Nov. 11 revealed that Coughlin is the NFL coach that players would least like to play for. Despite having a Super Bowl ring to his credit, Coughlin is even more unpopular in this survey than the Miami Dolphins’ Tony Sparano – who likely won’t have a job for much longer. When more players want to play for a doomed coach than one who has a 6-2 record and a Super Bowl, it certainly says something.

Of course, wins aren’t the whole story considering Coughlin’s iron fist and unbendable attitude. The Eagles helped make him look worse after Miracle at the Meadowlands II last December, as DeSean Jackson’s(notes) game-ending punt return made Coughlin scream at punter Matt Dodge seconds later. If one gets on his bad side, there is certainly little chance to escape his wrath no matter what the setting.

It seems that Coughlin’s intensity and the Giants’ difficult periods put his job in danger year after year. The Eagles have that same problem with Andy Reid, minus the intensity and red face. However, while the backlash against Reid just gets worse, especially during this season, Coughlin always seems to find a way to rally from the brink. After all, he saved his job by actually winning the Super Bowl four years ago, unlike other NFC East coaches so far.

Coughlin’s tactics may seem more and more out of place in an NFL that doesn’t have as many hard-line coaches as in years past. Yet they have kept him around in New York since 2004 and they helped him take the Jacksonville Jaguars to two AFC title games years earlier.

While no one may want to play for Coughlin, the Giants certainly win for him enough so that he can keep torturing players for a while longer. Unfortunately, he is doing that well enough right now to make the Eagles’ quest for a miraculous division title that much more difficult.

As such, Philadelphia will need to hope that a tough New York schedule brings the Giants down, since Coughlin’s attitude still isn’t going to do it. The Giants may not always like playing for him, but he just keeps getting enough out of them so that their frustration doesn’t show in the win column.

(Reuters) – In a win that evoked their Super Bowl triumph from the 2007 season, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in dramatic fashion on Sunday with a touchdown pass from Eli Manning in the final seconds.

Manning’s one-yard pass into the corner to Jake Ballard secured a 24-20 road win for the Giants, who trailed by three points with 1:36 remaining when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady found Rob Gronkowski with a 14-yard touchdown pass.

Manning completed 20 of 39 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns as the NFC East-leading Giants improved to 6-2 while New England dropped to 5-3 and into a three-way tie with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills for first in the AFC East.

The Jets enjoyed a statement win at Buffalo as Mark Sanchez tossed a touchdown to Santonio Holmes while LaDainian Tomlinson and John Conner also found the end zone as the Jets picked up their first road win of the season and handed the Bills their first home loss.

The Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers held off a furious late fightback by the San Diego Chargers to extend their perfect start to the National Football League season with a nail-biting 45-38 victory on Sunday.

Seemingly set for a crushing win when leading 45-24 in the final quarter, the Packers were stunned by two quick touchdowns as Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers twice connected with wide receiver Vincent Jackson in a 67-second span.

But the Packers held on to become only the third defending Super Bowl champion to start their following season 8-0.

The Indianapolis Colts’ awful season without injured quarterback Peyton Manning continued with a 31-7 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons (5-3). At 0-9 the Colts are the only winless team in the National Football League.

Manning has not practiced with the Colts since having neck surgery in September and the team could be without tight ends Dallas Clark and Brody Eldridge as both left Sunday’s game early with injuries.

RUNNING GAME

The Houston Texans, playing without top receiver Andre Johnson for a fifth straight game, showed off their running game in a 30-12 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Texans running backs Arian Foster (124 yards) and Ben Tate (115 yards) made up for the absence of Johnson, who remains out with a hamstring injury, as both scored touchdowns against a Browns (3-5) defense that struggled to defend the rush.

The Texans defense had a solid day though as Cleveland managed just 172 yards of total offense as they tried to recover from a pair of first quarter Houston touchdowns.

Houston (6-3) lead the AFC South and coach Gary Kubiak’s team are starting to look like serious post-season contenders with the effectiveness of their running game.

Tim Tebow earned his second win in three games as a starter for the Denver Broncos (3-5) after completing 10 of 21 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-24 road win over the Oakland Raiders (4-4).

While the hugely popular quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner as the top U.S. collegiate player put points on the board with his arm, it was his running game that stood out as he ran for 117 yards on 12 carries.

Running back Willis McGahee also helped Denver’s cause with two touchdowns and 163 yards rushing.

After losing in Tampa last month and suffering a surprise defeat to the St. Louis Rams last week, New Orleans badly needed a victory at home against the Bucs (4-4) and they got one with a solid all-round display.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees passed for 258 yards and two touchdowns while New Orleans (6-3) produced 195 yards on the ground thanks to the running of Chris Ivory, Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles.

The San Francisco 49ers grabbed their sixth straight win to improve to 7-1 with a 19-11 victory over the fading Washington Redskins (3-5).

The Miami Dolphins (1-7) finally picked up their first win of the season on the road at Kansas City with quarterback Matt Moore throwing for 244 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-3 win as the Chiefs (4-4) were unable to score after a first quarter field goal.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

In a win that evoked their Super Bowl triumph from the 2007 season, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in dramatic fashion today with a touchdown pass from Eli Manning in the final seconds.

The Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers held off a furious late fightback by the San Diego Chargers to extend their perfect start to the National Football League season with a nail-biting 45-38 victory today.

Manning has not practiced with the Colts since having neck surgery in September and the team could be without tight ends Dallas Clark and Brody Eldridge as both left today’s game early with injuries.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Walk through the ground floor of New York Giants headquarters and there are at least a half dozen life-size pictures of the organization’s remarkable Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots in February 2008.

There’s one of Eli Manning’s great escape on the play that led to “The Catch” by David Tyree. Even though he is with the Jets now, there is one of Plaxico Burress’ championship catch in the corner of the end zone. Another one shows Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora making a play and, of course, the obligatory shot of the Lombardi Trophy being lifted in celebration.

Look at them and it feels like yesterday.

The reality is that was almost four years ago, and much has changed as the Giants (5-2) and Patriots (5-2) prepare to meet for the first time in a regular-season game since Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Ariz.

The teams meet annually in the final preseason game, but this will be the first time that it means something again.

“It’s a new year,” said Pro Bowl guard Chris Snee, who was one of 14 players on the Giants’ 54-man roster who suited up for the title game. “There has been a lot of turnover on both teams. It doesn’t make any sense to think about a game four years ago.”

Guard David Diehl, who played tackle in the Super Bowl, says everybody is going to make comparisons to the game four years ago because it was such a great game under extraordinary circumstances.

No one gave the Giants a chance against the Tom Brady-led juggernaut that was looking to become the second NFL team to win the Super Bowl with an undefeated record.

New York found a way to orchestrate “The Great Escape,” ”The Catch” and Plax’s play in posting a 17-14 win.

“They’re a different team. We’re a different team,” Diehl said. “Obviously you’re going to hear all of that stuff throughout the week. We’re focusing on this season and what they’ve been doing this year.

“They’ve been playing defense differently. They’ve been doing different things up front. It’s the Giants versus the Patriots. This isn’t the Super Bowl.”

The Patriots only had seven players from that Super Bowl on their 53-man roster last week in losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

If there is a constant for both teams it’s at quarterback. It again will be Manning vs. Brady. And most people would think that’s a clear advantage for New England in the game at Foxboro, Mass.

However, Manning has more than held his own this season. He has completed 156 of 241 passes for 2,127 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. Brady is 184 of 272 for 2,361, 18 and eight. Both have quarterback ratings over 102 percent and are hitting on better than 64 percent of their passes.

“I think this is a whole new environment, whole new situation,” Manning said. “Obviously, an important game, we have to have a great week of preparation. We know we’re going against a great team, a Hall of Fame coach, a Hall of Fame quarterback down the road. We just have to go in there expecting to play sound football like we’ve been doing.

“Eliminate the mistakes, try to execute the game plan, try to get into the fourth quarter and win the game.”

That’s what the Giants did four years ago. But this year, their defense has struggled stopping the run, which might give Brady a second option this time around.

It’s a problem that Tuck says needs to be fixed now.

“If we were still living in the shadow of 2007, then that’s one of our greatest downfalls,” Tuck said. “We have to move on. Obviously they have and we do, too. Obviously, 2007 was a great year in all of our careers, but that’s not going to help us going there this year. A lot of guys are back from those two teams and a lot of guys are gone.

“The better team this year is going to win the football game, not the better team in ’07.”

The New York Giants have provided many exciting moments for their fans over the last 25 years. Although they have never won back to back Super Bowls and established a dynasty like the New England Patriots, they have appeared in 4 Super Bowls in the last 25 years, winning three of them. They also have a tendency to win in a very exciting fashion during the final minutes of their big games. Below I have provided a list of the top five game winning plays over the last 25 years.

5. November 4th 2001. The Giants were down 24-7 to the Dallas Cowboys at half time during a home game. The Giants needed to win this game to have any hope at getting back to the playoffs after winning the Super Bowl the previous year. The Giants were 4-4 and dropping to 4-5 would’ve made a return to the playoffs unlikely. Midway during the 4th quarter the Giants picked off Cowboy’s QB Clint Stoerner which set up Giants QB Kerry Collins(notes) for a touchdown pass to Ike Hilliard(notes), tying the game at 24-24 and eventually sending the game into overtime. The Cowboys received the ball first in over time, however the Giants defense stopped them and got the ball to Collins. Collins then led a 61 yard drive which gave 41 year old Morton Andersen a shot at kicking the game winning field goal. Andersen who had been signed during the off season came in and kicked the game winning field goal that won the game for NY in what was a most improbable victory.

4. 2006 NFC Title Game. The Giants started off the season 0-2 but managed to turn things around, and thanks to a 6 game road winning streak found themselves in the NFC championship against Green Bay on the road. It was minus 1 degree weather, which including the 12 MPH wind created a frigid minus 32 degree wind chill. The Giants found themselves in overtime after their Kicker Lawrence Tynes(notes) missed 2 field goals most likely due to the wind and extreme cold. However, two minutes and thirty five seconds into overtime Tynes connected on a 47 yard field goal to win the NFC title game and provide the Giants with an entrée to the Super Bowl against the 18-0 Patriots.

3. Super Bowl XLII. The Giants, who were 10-6 in the regular season, were going up against the Patriots who had a perfect season and were 16-0. The Patriots were chosen by virtually every “expert” to win the game and end up as the first team to ever have a 19-0 season. However NY’s defense had other plans and held the Patriots to only 14 points. Even with their defense doing a superb job the Giants were still behind with 35 seconds left in the game. That was until Eli Manning(notes) lofted the ball 13 yards to Plaxico Burress(notes) and ended up winning the game by a score of 17 to 14 thereby winning one of if not the most exciting Super Bowl game ever.

2. Super Bowl XXV. This is the only game on the list where the player who made the game winning play for the Giants wasn’t even on the Giants. With 8 seconds left in the game and the Giants barely holding on with a 20-19 lead, Bills kicker Scott Norwood attempted a routine 47 yard field goal that sailed far to the right helping win the Super Bowl for the Giants. Norwood never played again in the NFL.

1. Super Bowl XLII “The Catch.” Ironically my choice for the single best Giants game winning play ever isn’t even technically a game winning play. However the Giants wouldn’t have won the Super Bowl without it, and it is considered by many NFL fans and pundits to be the best play in any Super Bowl and is possibly the most exciting NFL play ever recorded on film. With the Giants losing 14-10 and 1:15 minutes left on the clock QB Eli Manning evaded three different sack attempts, somehow managed to pull free from a swarm of Patriot defenders and throw a 32 yard pass to David Tyree(notes) who while he was in mid air trapped the ball against his helmet with one hand while wrestling with Patriots defensive end Rodney Harrison(notes) as they both fell to the field. Somehow Tyree managed to gain possession of the ball with both hands before he hit the dirt and set up Manning for the game winning throw to Burress. Watch the play online if you haven’t seen it, it really is incredible. Just Manning’s part alone would’ve made this an incredible Super Bowl play, but adding Manning’s play to Tyree’s jaw dropping catch makes this the best Super Bowl play ever. Either part of the play on its own would’ve made top 10 Super Bowl play lists, but together there isn’t any other play that is even close.

Fox Sports Sponsored Post

Week 4

Game: New York Giants (2-1) at Arizona Cardinals (1-2)

Date: Sunday, October 2

Time: 4:05 PM EST

Game of the Week Status

After looking terrible in their opening-game loss, the New York Giants have won two straight to save their start to the season, which is something the Arizona Cardinals are desperate to do following two straight defeats.

Previous Week

In Week 3, the Giants picked up a huge 29-16 win against the Philadelphia Eagles, an NFC East rival who had beaten New York six straight and came into the season with Super Bowl expectations.

The Giants, though, managed to exact some revenge for the brutal loss to Philly that kept them out of the playoffs late last season – otherwise known as DeSean-Jackson-punt-return-TD-on-the-final-play game – as the Eagles now sit at the bottom of the division, thanks to Eli Manning and New York’s defense.

Despite playing with a receiving corps limited by injuries to WRs Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon, the Giants quarterback threw four TD passes last week, including the first two scores of WR Victor Cruz’s career. And Big Blue’s D actually knocked Eagles QB Michael Vick out of the game for the second week in a row, this time with an injured hand after he came into the contest only days removed from suffering a concussion.

As satisfying as the Giants win was, the Cardinals loss was equally as crushing considering their opponent. Arizona lost their second straight game by three points or less with an embarrassing 13-10 defeat at the hands of the inept Seattle Seahawks on the road. Aside from an early TD catch by WR Larry Fitzgerald, the Cards’ offense didn’t do much of anything against a Seattle D that had allowed 33 and 24 points in the first two weeks.

New QB Kevin Kolb threw a pair of picks in his worst outing of the season so far, and Arizona managed just 90 rushing yards after having to dip all the way down to Alfonso Smith, their fourth-string running back, because starter Beanie Wells and backup LaRod Stephens-Howling were out with injuries and fill-in Chester Taylor struggled to get going. The all-around ugly performance cost the Cardinals a share of the NFC West lead.

What To Expect

The Giants return to the University of Phoenix Stadium, the site of their Super Bowl XLII championship, and will look to take advantage of a Cardinals defense that has been surrendering chunks of yardage at a time. In fact, Arizona ranks 27th in total yards allowed, and has been susceptible both on the ground (122.7 yards per game, 27th overall) and in the air (275 yards per game, 25th overall).

With the expected return to health of Manningham (concussion) and the emergence of Cruz in addition to top target Hakeem Nicks (team-bests of 14 catches and 185 yards), Manning will have plenty at his disposal in the passing game, and lead back Ahmad Bradshaw (4.4 yards per carry) is capable of teaming with battering ram RB Brandon Jacobs to balance out the Giants’ attack.

As for the defensive side, it’s looking like another injured Giant, DE Osi Umenyiora, may debut following offseason knee surgery, which would make New York’s front line – which already features fellow ends Jason Pierre-Paul, a blossoming second-year player with 4.5 sacks already, and veteran sack artist Justin Tuck – that much more imposing.

Coincidentally, if the Giants are going to slow down Fitzgerald, a five-time Pro Bowler who is Arizona’s top offensive threat, a lot of responsibility will fall on former Cardinals S Antrel Rolle, the franchise’ first-rounder back in 2005.

While Kolb will, no doubt, look Fitzgerald’s way often, it may in fact be the health of Wells’ lingering hamstring injury that has the biggest impact on the team. If their top back can’t go or is limited, the Cardinals will turn into a one-dimensional offense because of their lack of depth behind Wells.

For his part, though, Wells, who’s averaging 5.7 yards per carry in his two games, is confident he’ll be back this week, and Arizona will need him to make a few big plays. Same goes for the Cards’ defensive backfield, which includes three playmakers in safeties Adrian Wilson and Kerry Rhodes along with rookie CB Patrick Peterson, the fifth overall pick in last April’s draft.

Given Manning’s knack for making a few questionable throws over the course of a game, an interception or two in a key spot could turn the tide in this game – and the Cardinals’ season.

Manning made it clear that it’s up general manager Jerry Reese, coach Tom Coughlin and Giants ownership to decide whether to re-sign Burress now that the gifted receiver has finished his nearly two-year prison sentence for a weapons possession violation.

Either way, Manning believes the Giants have the talent to have an explosive offence this season.

Burress, who was released from prison on June 6, visited with Coughlin, Reese and co-owner John Mara on Friday night at the Giants headquarters in an attempt to convince them that he could be a team player.

“I am going about my business and preparing myself,” the Giants quarterback said Saturday on the first day of practice at training camp. “I don’t lobby for anybody. If this is the right spot for Plaxico, if the Giants and coach Coughlin are pleased with his attitude after talking to him, I am happy to have him.

“But I am preparing with the guys we have here and now,” Manning said. “I am not out lobbying for (tight end) Kevin Boss either. I think he (Burress) is a great player and would love to have him. You know the Giants know what they are doing. If they want my two cents, my advice, then I’d be happy to talk to them about it.”

Coughlin said he had a nice conversation with Burress and was happy they talked on Friday night, but he would not discuss what was said. The coach had said this was the first step in evaluating Burress, and he added there might be another.

Manning and Burress combined for 33 touchdown receptions between 2005-08, with none being bigger than the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl victory over New England in February 2008, when Manning won the MVP.

Burress, however, also annoyed the quarterback by failing to show up for off-season workouts and nothing was worse than when the receiver shot himself in the leg in a New York City nightclub in November 2008. It led to his dismissal from the team, a loss that hurt the Giants’ offence down the stretch and ultimately led to their early ouster from the playoffs in a season that seemed headed for another long post-season run.

While other players greeted Burress warmly Friday night after his visit, Manning did not talk to him because he said he was in meetings with coaches.

Manning said he talked to Burress a few weeks ago to see how he was doing after his release and to wish him well.

When pressed, Manning said Burress is a big target (six-foot-five) who can go up and get the game and make plays.

“That is always a nice thing to have in your back pocket,” Manning said.

If Burress were to sign elsewhere, Manning felt the Giants have enough talent to compensate with Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Steve Smith, Domenik Hixon and other young wideouts such as Victor Cruz and Ramses Barden among others. There’s also a running game that features Brandon Jacobs, D.J. Ware and possibly Ahmad Bradshaw, if he were to re-sign with New York. Re-signing Boss to play tight end also would help.

“We have a lot of skills in the offensive positions and a lot of receivers who can make big plays,” Manning said. “We have a number of guys that can step up and prove that they can be depended on, week in and week out.”

The Giants are going to have to produce with the NFC East defending champion Philadelphia Eagles adding Nnamdi Asomugha, one of the NFL’s best cover cornerbacks.

Manning said that when the Giants won the Super Bowl after the 2007, they were able to combine talent and great work ethic.

“People see the final results of the ’07 year, when he (Burress) didn’t practice all year and say we won a championship,” Manning said. “Well, we went 10-6 and barely made the playoffs. It wasn’t like everything was a breeze and we went 14-2. It was tough, we struggled, we went through low points. Everything was not always perfect. It is about being dependable, being committed to the team and showing up for practice, working hard and doing everything you can to get yourself and the team prepared to play each game.”

Notes: Manning hopes his brother, Peyton, will be ready in the Indianapolis Colts’ season opener against Houston on Sept. 11. Peyton had neck surgery in May and he won’t be on the field when Indianapolis starts its training camp. “I hope he is for his sake, football and the Colts,” Eli said of his brother playing in the Colts’ season opener “He is on the right track and hopefully he is back.”

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Plaxico Burress has a chance of playing for the New York Giants again if he can convince coach Tom Coughlin that he can be a team player.

Burress received his chance to plead to his case to his former coach on Friday night, in a face-to-face meeting at the Giants headquarters on the first day of training camp.

“What I have to hear is sincerity,” Coughlin said late Friday afternoon, roughly two hours before the scheduled meeting, the first between the two since the soon-to-be 34-year-old receiver and Super Bowl hero was imprisoned for almost two years on a weapons possessions charge.

“I am looking forward to it. I will be opened minded about it,” Coughlin said. “It’s an opportunity in a confidential setting to sit down, and what I feel is it will be Plaxico’s opportunity to speak. I am going to listen and decipher. I’ll ask questions, but basically I would like to hear what he has to say.”

The meeting was scheduled to start at 6 p.m., but there was no word whether it started.

Burress, who was released from prison on June 6, is hoping to revive his career. There has been talk about him joining either the Giants or his other old team, the Steelers.

The Giants asked Coughlin to talk with Burress.

“Ownership would like to think that we can sit down and talk about it and secondly, you know, this is business,” Coughlin said. “It’s not personal for me. It’s business. I can separate the two. I have no ego in terms of what I have to accomplish with regard to him or anybody else. I’m willing to listen.

Coughlin plans to listen, go over what was said and then report back to management and say whether two can work together again.

The Giants insist they are serious about possibly signing Burress, who provided their one true deep threat during his time with the club between 2005-09.

“We don’t bring guys in just for the fun of it,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “We won’t bring a guy in unless we are serious about the possibility of signing him.”

Coughlin and Burress had a rocky relationship during their first tenure and the receiver was fined repeatedly. However, he also caught the game-winning touchdown in the win over New England in the Super Bowl in February 2008.

Less than a year later, Burress shot himself in the leg in a New York City nightclub in late November. He was kicked off the Giants weeks later and the team fell apart in the playoffs. Burress was jailed the following September after pleading guilty to a weapons possession charge.

Burress criticized Coughlin after his release, but the coach downplayed it, saying all he wants is commitment from his players.

“When you sign on to go to work for someone you have to go to work, you have to be there on time,” Coughlin said. “What is there to change? When you come down to it, that’s the basic ingredient or rule. Jump into the team as hard as you can, as fast as you can, but understand your responsibility, people depend on you.”

Burress let down the Giants in 2008. The team was 11-1 and had a chance to make another title run, but the offense disappeared when Burress was let go.

Veteran David Diehl said he would be willing to give Burress another chance, simply because of how he can dynamically change an offense.

“If anyone has felt the consequences of his actions, it’s him,” Diehl said. “For us to sit here and be in the situation where we might get him back, I think we would welcome him with open arms.”
