Now that the New York Giants have ended their losing streak, they have a
clear path to the NFC East title.

The next step comes Sunday at home and the Giants will have to contend with
a number of injury problems as they try to avenge a season-opening defeat to the
Washington Redskins.

New York (7-6) held a two-game division lead after starting 6-2, then fell a
game behind Dallas thanks to a four-game slide. Eli Manning, however, guided the
Giants to two touchdowns in the final 3:14 to rally them to a 37-34 road victory
over the Cowboys last Sunday and a share of first place before Dallas’ win at
Tampa Bay on Saturday dropped New York one-half game back.

“We knew that we couldn’t afford to fall further behind Dallas when we went
into the game,” offensive lineman Kevin Boothe said. “We are in a playoff-type
atmosphere from here on out. We have a big division game this week and we have
to take it one game at a time and see what happens. We have to give Washington
our best shot.”

New York can clinch the division by winning one of its next two games along
with the regular-season finale at home against Dallas.

The Giants, though, are dealing with numerous injuries.

Pro Bowler Justin Tuck failed to record a tackle against the Cowboys and
could sit out with a toe injury while fellow defensive end Osi Umenyiora could
miss a third straight game with a sprained ankle. Safety Kenny Phillips missed
the Dallas game with a sprained left knee.

Tuck and Umenyiora were both injured when they sat out a 28-14 loss at
Washington (4-9) in the opener. Rex Grossman continued his success against the
Giants with 305 yards passing and two touchdowns as the Redskins ended a
six-game slide in the series.

That loss didn’t stop Giants safety Antrel Rolle from saying earlier this
week that New York could beat Washington 99 out of 100 times.

“I know what the outcome of the game should be come Sunday,” Rolle said. “It
is up to us to go out there and put it on film and make sure the outcome is what
we plan.”

Three of Grossman’s six best games in terms of passing yards have come
against New York. He didn’t sound too worried about Rolle’s comments.

“It is the NFL and nobody is going to beat anyone 99 out of 100 times,”
Grossman said. “I am confident about where we are. We haven’t finished games
lately and we need to finish and everything should take care of itself.”

Grossman was sacked four times in the first meeting, twice by Jason
Pierre-Paul. The Giants defensive end had two more last week to bring his season
total to 12 1/2, and he blocked Dan Bailey’s tying field-goal attempt near the
end of regulation.

Pierre-Paul has come on strong after he registered 4 1/2 sacks in 2010 as a
rookie.

“I’m not thinking as much as I was last year,” Pierre-Paul said. “Last year,
I was on and off and I wasn’t sure about all of the calls so I was playing
slow.”

Pierre-Paul and the Giants’ pass rush will be looking at a patchwork
Washington offensive line that is far different from what they saw in Week 1.
Right tackle Jammal Brown missed last week’s 34-27 loss to New England with a
groin injury as Tyler Polumbus replaced him while left tackle Trent Williams
continues to serve his suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse
policy.

Manning failed to throw a touchdown pass against Washington in the opener -
one of two times that has happened this year. He recorded his third 400-yard
effort of the season last Sunday and is fourth in the league with a career-high
4,105 passing yards and sixth with 25 TD passes.

Manning has totaled 1,153 yards with seven touchdowns and three
interceptions over his last three games.

“Eli has taken it upon himself to throw the ball well, and exceptionally
well for the last three games,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “But he’s
played well the whole year.”

A major reason why Manning’s numbers are up is that New York owns the NFL’s
worst rushing attack at 85.8 yards per game.

There is reason for optimism. With Ahmad Bradshaw suspended for the start of
last week’s game due to a violation of team rules, Brandon Jacobs gained a
season-high 101 yards on 19 carries with two scores.

“Nobody wants to hit that guy running like he’s running other than they have
to,” said Giants coach Tom Coughlin about Jacobs. “It’s the right message and
when you see him north and south as hard as he can go and the pile’s going
forward, we’re all cheering.”

Washington has the league’s second-worst rushing attack at 93.8 yards per
game, but rookie Roy Helu has reached 100 for three straight weeks. Helu had a
season-high 126 last week.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

What a way to end a losing streak.

There’s a lot you can say about the 2011 New York Giants with three weeks left to play. They’ve found incredible ways to both win and lose games, played themselves out of and back into first place and reminded fans of the 2007 squad; both in good and bad ways. Last Sunday’s contest at Dallas, arguably the game of the 2011 season, could be the beginning of yet another special run for the franchise. With the way the Giants have played over the past five weeks, Sunday’s win could also turn out to be nothing more than one enormous tease.

3 final thoughts on Giants win at Cowboys: Luck

This was hardly a “lucky” win for the Giants. Both Eli Manning and Jason Pierre-Paul put in MVP performances Sunday night, and New York came up with the game’s biggest plays when it mattered most. You still can’t help but look back at one fourth quarter play, one that seemed to be a missed opportunity at the time, and chuckle just a bit. Manning had wide receiver Mario Manningham down the right sideline with roughly 90 seconds left on the clock, and the clutch QB located his target with a perfectly placed pass in the end zone. The pass fell through Manningham’s arms, however, forcing the New York offense to run a few more plays and take time off the clock before eventually coming up with what ended up being the game winning touchdown. Had Manningham caught that ball, Tony Romo and company would have had at least a few extra plays to move down the field during the game’s final drive. That’s a scary thought considering how poorly New York’s secondary played throughout the contest.

3 final thoughts on Giants win at Cowboys: Welcome back

Brandon Jacobs has had two consecutive solid outings, but it’s not his stats that have impressed me. Something in Jacobs changed after the loss to the Saints, as he’s been hitting holes and playing an overall more physical style of football in New York’s past two contests. It’s the most motivated we’ve seen Jacobs in quite awhile, as the tiptoeing running back looking to avoid contact at the line seems to have disappeared.

Jacobs won’t be facing the hated Cowboys every weekend, nor will fellow running back Ahmad Bradshaw be sidelined due to “violating team rules” over the next three weeks. If this Brandon Jacobs can remain fresh, healthy and motivated, New York’s rushing attack is going to find its form at the best possible time. Eli Manning has been the team’s MVP this season, but him having a strong backfield is a necessity for Big Blue to do anything big this January.

3 final thoughts on Giants win at Cowboys: Playoffs or bust

I’ve been a huge Tom Coughlin defender over the past couple of years. That will end if New York doesn’t qualify for the upcoming postseason. The Giants don’t travel again this regular season, as they host the Washington Redskins in Week 15 and the Cowboys in Week 17, and are “visitors” against the New York Jets on Christmas Eve. Big Blue needs to win just two of three “home games” to claim the NFC East crown. Barring any injuries to significant players between now and January 1, it’s now playoffs or bust for Coughlin and company.

The Giants are hardly a perfect team. The defense has significant holes, and the New York rushing attack has been non-existent at times. Going 1-2 at MetLife over the next three weekends is simply unacceptable. Truth be told, the playoffs begin this Sunday with a home game against the last place Redskins.

While the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys both lost last weekend, the damage by those defeats can easily be mitigated thanks to what’s at stake this weekend.

The Giants will try to end a four-game losing streak Sunday night on the road against the Cowboys as these rivals play for the NFC East lead.

Dallas (7-5) leads New York (6-6) by one game. The Giants led the race by two before their slide.

The Cowboys had their four-game win streak snapped thanks to mistakes that included poor clock management in last Sunday’s 19-13 overtime loss at Arizona – a defeat that cost them a chance to clinch the division this weekend.

“Most importantly, we have to put this one to bed and go to the next one,” coach Jason Garrett said.

The Giants, meanwhile, seem buoyed despite last Sunday’s 38-35 last-second loss to Green Bay. After giving the unbeaten Packers their toughest game, New York is looking forward to the chance to move back into first place.

“The mindset is looking ahead,” quarterback Eli Manning said. “It doesn’t matter what you’ve done last week or what your record is. It’s what you’re playing for, who you have this week. And you have Dallas, Sunday night football, that’s a big one.”

These teams’ quarterbacks are having similar seasons. Manning has a 96.0 passer rating, 23 touchdowns to 11 interceptions and 3,705 passing yards. Tony Romo owns a 97.3 rating with 22 touchdowns to nine interceptions and 3,325 yards through the air.

“I think everyone knows this is an important game and you have to play the best football this time of year,” Romo said. “We’re going to go out there and give great effort and be ready for a great challenge in the Giants.”

Each passing game could get a boost Sunday.

Receiver Mario Manningham, out the last two games with a sore knee, could return for New York. Manningham has three touchdown catches in his last four games against Dallas and would complement a group that includes Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz.

Cruz is fourth in the league with 1,076 receiving yards after three straight 100-yard efforts.

Cowboys star receiver Miles Austin and blocking fullback Tony Fiammetta returned to practice Wednesday and both are expected to play. That should provide help to an offense that has produced three touchdowns over the last two games.

“We feel like we have a rejuvenated offense,” receiver Laurent Robinson said.

The Giants had some changes on their offensive line last week with Kevin Boothe replacing David Baas (neck) at center and Mitch Petrus entering at left guard. Dave Diehl had already replaced the injured Will Beatty at left tackle.

Diehl is accustomed to that spot from years past, and could renew his battle with linebacker DeMarcus Ware. Ware, who leads the NFL with 15 sacks, sat out practice Wednesday with a stinger.

“That has always been a great matchup and there have been some other ones all across the board on both sides of the ball,” Garrett said. “That is certainly one of the subplots of the game and we are excited to see how it plays out.”

No NFC team has more sacks than the Cowboys’ 35, and the Giants are close behind with 33.

New York’s rushing defense is 23rd in the league, allowing 127.0 yards per game. The Giants will get their first look at Cowboys rookie DeMarco Murray, who averaged 108.5 yards rushing during the win streak before being limited to 38 last Sunday.

“I think they are averaging 114 yards a game rushing,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “They are doing some good things with the run game.”

The Giants remain last in the league in rushing with 83.8 yards per game. They reached 100 for the first time in four games last Sunday as Ahmad Bradshaw returned after missing four straight with a broken bone in his right foot.

New York’s depleted secondary received good news on safety Kenny Phillips, who left the Green Bay game with a knee sprain but could play.

These teams split notable meetings last season.

Romo’s season came to an early end with a broken collarbone due to a hit by Michael Boley in last year’s 41-35 home loss to New York – part of a 1-7 start that led to the dismissal of coach Wade Phillips.

Garrett had a memorable debut as interim coach, guiding Dallas to a 33-20 victory at New York in the last meeting Nov, 14. 2010.

Their upcoming clash Jan. 1 in the regular-season finale has the chance to be even more dramatic.

New York has won both previous matchups at Cowboys Stadium, where Manning has six touchdown passes, three interceptions, a 68.5 completion percentage and 636 passing yards.

What are your opinions.

New York’s depleted secondary received good news on safety Kenny Phillips(notes),
who left the Green Bay game with a knee sprain but could play.

These teams split notable meetings last season.

Romo’s season came to an early end with a broken collarbone due to a hit by
Michael Boley(notes) in last year’s 41-35 home loss to New York – part of a 1-7 start
that led to the dismissal of coach Wade Phillips.

Garrett had a memorable debut as interim coach, guiding Dallas to a 33-20
victory at New York in the last meeting Nov, 14. 2010.

Their upcoming clash Jan. 1 in the regular-season finale has the chance to
be even more dramatic.

New York has won both previous matchups at Cowboys Stadium, where Manning
has six touchdown passes, three interceptions, a 68.5 completion percentage and
636 passing yards.

One day after falling to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, the New York Giants suffered another loss Monday. Cornerback Michael Coe needs season-ending surgery on his shoulder, and the team will place him on injured reserve.

Coach Tom Coughlin said Jimmy Kennedy will be placed back on the 53-man roster. Kennedy recently ended a four-game suspension after testing positive for performance-enhancing substances.

Coughlin also noted that tackle Will Beatty was sent to have his back examined. Beatty played against the Philadelphia Eagles, but experienced discomfort during the week of practices leading up to the game.

Tight end Jake Ballard is not expected to miss any time after suffering an elbow injury, but defensive back Derrick Martin has a small tear of his hamstring.

D.J. Ware also left Sunday’s game with a concussion. There has been no update today on the running back’s condition, however.

The Giants lost to Philadelphia 17-10 on Sunday night, leaving Coughlin to steam about his team’s performance.

“As I just said to each one of the players, first start off with yourself and look at yourself in the mirror. Ask yourself. Because my question for them was ‘why?’ What does it take to understand what the Eagles were going to be like coming here? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that the team is 3-6 with their backs to the wall, they are going to play their butts off. To get to where we wanted to go, we had to play better and harder and we didn’t,” Coughlin said.

Week 12: Monday November 28 – New Orleans Saints – 8:30 pm ET

The Giants hit the road for their second primetime game in a row, this time against the on and off New Orleans Saints. For the New York Giants to pull out a victory, it will be up to the defense to stop Drew Brees(notes) and weapons like Darren Sproles(notes). Turnovers and a driving offense can give the Giants a must-needed win in Week 12.

Week 13: Sunday December 4 – Green Bay Packers – 4:15 pm ET

The Green Bay Packers have seemed unstoppable this season, but the New York Giants love to play as the underdogs. Just like they came into New England and defeated the Patriots, the Giants have a chance of uplifting the Packers undefeated streak if it is still intact. The home field advantage should help Eli, but the defense needs to prevent Rodgers’ pass game.

Week 14: Sunday December 11 – Dallas Cowboys – 8:20 pm ET

The Giants head back to Sunday Night Football on NBC as they take on the Dallas Cowboys in the first of two games this season. If the Cowboys continue their hot streak, this game could have NFL playoff contention written all over it. Dallas has the advantage playing at home, but this game will be close and hard fought.

Week 15: Sunday December 18 – Washington Redskins – 1:00 pm ET

An opening day loss to the Redskins was tough for Giants fans and now the Redskins have continued a downhill struggle, expect the Giants to come back with a vengeance and victory.

Week 16: Saturday, December 24 – New York Jets – 1:00 pm ET

The preseason rivals will have a regular season match-up on Christmas Eve. The crowd will be hot in this one, and as long as Eli stays strong, the Giants offense should overpower the Jets defense and lead to a victory here.

Week 17: Sunday, January 1 – Dallas Cowboys – 1:00 pm ET

Celebrate the new year with some football as the final game could decide the NFC East division Champions. A win for the Giants here will start off 2012 with a playoff berth and potential run to the Superbowl.

Roughly 48 hours after the conclusion of Sunday’s New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers game, a game the Niners won 27-20, I’m still taking time to go back and watch video highlights. Often times, a station’s “Game of the Week” fails to live up to the hype. This match-up had everything you could want in a football game; miscues which cost teams points, highlight reel touchdowns, impressive fourth quarter drives and a team ten yards away from tying the game with less than 60 seconds on the clock. The Giants just weren’t the better team on Sunday, although they did show they’re more than capable of playing with the best of the best in the NFL.

3 final thoughts on Giants at 49ers game: Manning and Mario

Since August, I’ve often remarked that the Eli Manning(notes) to Mario Manningham(notes) connection has just seemed “off” at times. Don’t let Mario’s six catches and impressive touchdown reception fool you. This is still a problem halfway through the 2011 NFL regular season. Manning and Manningham weren’t on the same page a few times Sunday afternoon, and one such instance resulted in a costly turnover which immediately led to a 49ers touchdown. One football analyst commented to me that the problem is Manningham running wrong routes and not Manning confusing his wide receivers. Whatever the issue is, it’s a significant concern. As we saw in the second half of last Sunday’s game, just one such mistake can very quickly lead to a seven-point swing, a touchdown which ultimately is the difference between a potential game-winning field goal attempt and a loss.

3 final thoughts on Giants at 49ers game: Missing piece

The New York defense which helped the team win a Super Bowl a few years back was never the same whenever Antonio Pierce(notes) wasn’t on the field. He was an on-the-field coordinator as well as a playmaker, the true heart and soul of the defense. Michael Boley(notes) is the Pierce of the 2011 defense, so much so that Justin Tuck(notes) has called Boley the “defense’s most indispensable player.” Boley injured his hamstring during Sunday’s game at San Francisco, and it’s likely he’ll miss this weekend’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants have survived injuries at every position on defense thus far. Losing Boley for any amount of games at the most pivotal time of the regular season would unquestionably be a significant blow, and could possibly end up being the big story of November and December for Big Blue.

3 final thoughts on Giants at 49ers game: Looking both back and ahead

The Giants play to the level of their opponent. They’ve done it all season long. That’s good news considering New York will face the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers in the next three weeks. It’s also a bit worrisome, as New York hosts free-falling Philadelphia this Sunday night. The Giants lost at home to a pretty bad Seahawks game back in Week 5. Granted, Seattle beat the Baltimore Ravens this past Sunday, but New York had no business losing to Clipboard Jesus and company back in October. If the Giants don’t come out Sunday night looking to put the Dream Team-gles away for good with an emphatic win, Philadelphia is going to surprise a lot of people. The Giants team from this past Sunday beats the Eagles by at least a touchdown. The one which lost to the Seahawks, however, gets booed off the field at the end of the game Sunday night.

In discussing Justin Smith’s game-clinching play, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said the 49ers’ defensive tackle “decided not to rush” and “guessed right.”

Wrong.

In the aftermath of San Francisco’s 27-20 win over the Giants at Candlestick Park on Sunday, Smith said his bat-down of Eli Manning’s 4th-and-2 pass from the Niners’ 10 with 37 seconds left wasn’t inspired by savvy or studying video.

Instead, Smith was simply too tired to rush Manning for a 40th and final time. Fortunately for San Francisco, the typically indefatigable Smith was able to lift his right hand while the rest of his body barely moved after the snap.

“No. 1, I was tired,” Smith said. “No. 2, the (coaches) were telling us to get our hands up. I just put my hand up there. Luckily, it was where the ball went. It was just blind luck.”

In contrast with Smith’s assessment of his game-sealer, the 49ers’ eighth win in their first nine games wasn’t a result of good fortune against a team that entered with a 6-2 record, a mark built thanks to Manning, who had directed five fourth-quarter comebacks this season.

Mr. Clutch fell short against Mr. Game Manager.

That would be 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who completed 19 of 30 passes for 242 yards and tossed a go-ahead, fourth-quarter touchdown to tight end Vernon Davis. Smith followed by connecting with wide receiver Michael Crabtree on the two-point conversion to give San Francisco a 20-13 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Smith’s razor-sharp performance came after Giants defensive end Justin Tuck disparagingly suggested in the days before the game that the 49ers were trying to keep their quarterback “out of position to win the football game.”

Harbaugh said such comments are clearly intended as slights to a QB who has thrown 11 touchdowns and three interceptions while posting a 95.8 rating this season. Smith said he felt no extra satisfaction in delivering in light of Tuck’s pregame comments.

“I just saw the one (comment) where I got called a manager or whatever, and this and that,” Smith said. “I could really care less, honestly. That is the honest truth. It feels good to be 8-1. I managed myself into a victory, and that’s all I care about.”

After establishing a run-heavy offense headlined by running back Frank Gore in the season’s first eight games, the 49ers created a game plan built around Smith. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman figured the Giants’ defensive blueprint would be simple: Stop the run.

Gore, who didn’t play in the second half because of a knee injury he didn’t consider serious, entered with five straight 100-yard games, and New York’s 25th-ranked run defense had allowed four 100-yard rushers this season.

So the Niners opened by passing on 17 of 25 first-half plays and built a 9-6 lead on three field goals from David Akers. Roman said Tuck’s comments might have tipped the Giants’ hand “a little bit.”

“We had kind of went ground-and-pound there for a while and the table was set to throw the ball,” Roman said. “As the defenses continue to load the box more and more … we wanted to come out throwing this game a lot, and the guys did a great job executing it.”

Smith’s counterpart also sparkled.

Manning (26-for-40, 311 yards, two TDs, two interceptions) gave the Giants a 13-12 lead on an exquisitely placed 13-yard pass to Mario Manningham in the right corner of the end zone with 2:25 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Smith answered with his touchdown to Davis and, 59 seconds later, the Niners struck again after Manning’s pass was intercepted by cornerback Carlos Rogers. On the next play, running back Kendall Hunter, subbing for Gore, scored on a 17-yard run to give the 49ers a 27-13 lead.

Justin Smith still didn’t feel comfortable against Manning, who, he said, was channeling his more-established older brother Sunday.

“It felt like you were playing Peyton out there,” Smith said. “He checked every play, waited for our secondary to rotate late and still changed the play. He’s a heck of a quarterback.”

Manning also channeled some of his previous fourth-quarter performances this season, connecting with Hakeem Nicks on another perfectly placed 32-yard touchdown pass to close the gap to 27-20 with 8:43 left.

But after completing 6 of 9 passes for 58 yards on the Giants’ final drive – converting two fourth downs in the process – Manning’s final pass was knocked down by an exhausted Pro Bowler who got “lucky.”

“Those guys have a knack for being in the right place at the right time and making a play,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “Part of the reason was I’m sure he was so tired he didn’t get anywhere near the quarterback and stuck his hand up.”

Memory lane

On Sunday, the 49ers extended their winning streak to seven games, their longest streak since an 11-gamer in 1997. Jim Harbaugh, a first-year head coach who came from a Bay Area college (Stanford), leads this San Francisco team. Steve Mariucci, a first-year head coach who came from a Bay Area college (Cal), was in charge of the ’97 squad. Some other comparisons:

The New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers are two of the biggest surprises at the halfway point of the season in the National Football League.

The 49ers (7-1), who have a comfortable lead in the NFC West, and the NFC East-leading Giants (6-2) meet Sunday in a mid-season clash.

“We just feel like this is a team, it’s not individual play no more,” said tackle Ricky Jean Francois of San Francisco, who can move closer to clinching a division title before the end of the month by extending their longest winning streak in 14 years.

The Giants have failed to make it to the post-season each of the last two seasons. They are two games ahead of the second-placed Dallas Cowboys and three ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles, who were expected to dominate the division.

But that has not happened and the Giants bolstered their status as viable contenders for a division title by beating the New England Patriots 24-20 last week, as quarterback Eli Manning hit tight end Jake Ballard for a one-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left in the game.

While New York’s rise has been unexpected, the 49ers surprisingly have the NFL’s second-best record under first-year coach Jim Harbaugh. San Francisco have finished at or below .500 in each of the past eight years.

“A lot of people doubted us, a lot of people put us out because we didn’t have an offseason, we had a whole new staff, we’re going to be lost and running around with our heads cut off,” Francois said.

“But with the dedication and all the time everybody put aside to build it we weren’t going to have no lacking.”

The 49ers have the league’s top-ranked run defense, yielding 70.8 yards per game and 61.3 over the last three games.

In another key Sunday matchup, the New York Jets meet their rivals the New England Patriots. It has been four weeks since the Jets lost to the Patriots, and subsequently had their postseason hopes called into question.

Jets coach Rex Ryan would love nothing more than to give the Patriots a similar experience.

The now red-hot Jets have a chance at MetLife Stadium to send the struggling Patriots to their first three-game losing skid in nine years. The Jets are 4-0 at home this season.

“Both teams are going to be humming for this one, no question,” Ryan said. “You can sugarcoat it all you want, but they know they need it and we know we need it. Both teams are going to be hungry.”

In the Monday night game, the Green Bay Packers will try to keep their perfect record intact by tightening up on the defensive end when they host the Minnesota Vikings.

“We’re 8-0. We’ve earned it,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “But we have expectations and the level of play that not only the individual expects of himself but what we expect of each position, each unit.”

Despite returning two interceptions for touchdowns last Sunday, the Packers conceded its most points of the season and almost blew a 21-point lead in a 45-38 win over the Chargers in San Diego.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Packers (8-0) are off to their best start since opening with 10 consecutive victories in 1962.

The Vikings do not plan to back down, said receiver Percy Harvin.

“We’ve shown on tape that if we execute, we can play with any team in this league,” he said.

This week’s action kicked off Thursday night as the Oakland Raiders seized first place in the AFC West by beating the San Diego Chargers 24-17.

Carson Palmer threw two touchdown passes and Michael Bush ran 30 times for a season-high 157 yards and one touchdown to lead the Raiders over the Chargers, who suffered their fourth-straight loss.

Other games on Sunday are Rams at Browns, Steelers at Bengals, Saints at Falcons, Bills at Cowboys, Titans at Panthers, Broncos at Chiefs, Jaguars at Colts, Cardinals at Eagles, Texans at Buccaneers, Redskins at Dolphins, Ravens at Seahawks and Lions at Bears.

New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw is going to miss his second straight game with a broken bone in his right foot.

Coach Tom Coughlin on Friday ruled out Bradshaw for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. Receiver-returner Jerrel Jernigan also won’t play because of a hip injury suffered during a 24-20 win at New England last weekend.

Hakeem Nicks’ hamstring continued to improve, and there’s a 50-50 chance the Giants’ leading receiver will play against the 49ers after sitting out the Patriots game.

Center David Baas (knee) also is questionable.

Chargers: Coach Norv Turner says Philip Rivers shouldn’t be blamed for reeling San Diego’s 24-17 loss to the Raiders on Thursday. On the contrary, Turner praised Rivers for surviving a fierce pass rush that resulted in six sacks and numerous hits. “I’ve been around some guys that wouldn’t make it that far through that game,” Turner said. Rivers was 23 of 47 for 274 yards with two touchdowns, an interception and a fumble. Turner also didn’t say which, if any, of the injured players are likely to return against Chicago on Nov. 20. Starting tackle Marcus McNeill left in the first quarter Thursday with an apparent stinger.

Broncos: Denver rookie linebacker Von Miller was fined $15,000 by the NFL for his helmet-to-chest hit on Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer last weekend.

Seahawks: Through eight games, tight end Zach Miller has been a glorified offensive

lineman. But Seattle didn’t lock up Miller for five years to just be an extra lineman. Seattle wanted his pass-catching ability as another component of its offense. So far, that hasn’t happened. The former Raiders tight end enters Sunday’s game against Baltimore with just 11 catches for 99 yards. “It’s on us to get him the football,” coach Pete Carroll said. Miller was shut out last week against Dallas and didn’t even get a pass thrown his way in the 23-13 loss. “It’s important to get the ball to your tight ends and use that middle of the field,” Miller said.

Texans: Star wide receiver Andre Johnson will miss his sixth straight game as he continues a longer-than-expected recovery from a hamstring injury. After Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay, Houston has a bye week before playing at Jacksonville on Nov. 27. “We just felt the best thing was just to wait and go through the off week,” Johnson said.

Bears: Chicago approaches Sunday’s game with Detroit uncertain over Devin Hester’s status. The receiver-returner has an ankle sprain.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

BOSTON (CBS) – The CBSBoston sports team makes their predictions for the New England Patriots showdown with the New York Giants at Gillette Stadium.

Andy Gresh, 98.5 The Sports Hub

The Patriots will have their hands full with the Giants three wide receivers set, and if they don’t get pressure on Eli Manning they’ll have issues.

But I expect the New England defense to be way better than last week. They’ll run for at least 125 yards offensively and win 31-17.

Scott Zolak, 98.5 The Sports Hub

The Patriots will have to start fast on offense giving the way the last two weeks have have gone.

Gresh & Zo Whiteboard: Stopping The Giants Pass-Rush

They need to mix the run in more to help keep their pass rush off Tom Brady. Look for the tight ends to be big on seam routes against a depleted secondary. The defense should have confidence if Hakeem Nicks and Ahmad Bradshaw are out.

Pats by 10

Steve Burton, WBZ-TV Sports

After last week’s loss, the Patriots not only need to bounce back but they need to bounce back with authority.

Let’s start with the defense. Can anybody sack the quarterback besides Andre Carter? Eli Manning can be rattled, so less zone coverage and start blitzing!

Steve Gives His Prediction On WBZ NewsRadio 1030

More pressure on the QB should help the secondary as well. Receivers have been too wide open, especially over the middle of the field. You know things aren’t good when your nose tackle has more interceptions than your cover guys…

Stats: Patriots-Giants Head to Head

As far as the offense goes, Kevin Faulk is back and looks like he hasn’t lost a beat. He’s still strong, hungry and smart. But just because the savvy vet is back doesn’t mean he should take the ball away from BenJarvis Green-Ellis or Stevan Ridley. Both have run well, just not so much in the last few weeks.

The offensive line will have their hands full again, so they need to worry about more protection and less penalties. Stop jumping offsides! If you give Tom Brady the time he can pick apart any defense, even with receivers that can’t get open.

And Ocho, it’s Week 9. Do Something!

Dan Roche, WBZ-TV Sports

I think this will be a tough game for the Patriots for two reasons:

1) The Giants have the ability to pressure Tom Brady by simply using their 4 down linemen. Jason Pierre-Paul(8.5 sacks), Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, and crew can give Brady fits within the pocket. You just hope Brady has time to find Welker, Branch or the tight ends. If he doesn’t, it could be another frustrating day.

2) Eli Manning. He’s played at an elite level this season as he’s fourth behind Rodgers, Brees, and Brady in passing yards per game with a 304 yd/gm average. He’s seventh in the NFL with 13 TD’s and has thrown only five picks. If he can pick apart the Pats secondary like Ben Roethlisberger did, then watch out.

With that said, I still like the Pats to bounce back. Per the Pats PR staff, New England is 26-2 since the beginning of the 2003 season in games following a loss and they’ve lost back-to-back-games just twice, once in 2006 and once in 2009.

Not to mention they are at Gillette, where only one NFC team has won since it opened.

Final: Pats 24-21

Dan Roche and Levan Reid Break Down The Giants

Levan Reid, WBZ-TV Sports

It would be easy for me to say the Pats are going to win this game because they are playing at home. That seems to be the easy finish when New England takes on anyone at Gillette Stadium. But coming off a loss, that I thought would happen but did not have the mustard to predict, I think they are going to bounce back.

All week-long in that locker room, the defense has had to hear it. They are getting killed nationally and for good reason, right now they are not that good defensively. This week I expect them to take some of that pride back. It would be nice to see the Pats blitz and mix up coverages. The focus this week will also be for that defense to get off the field. This will be a good test because Eli Manning is having a very good season.

Read: Levan Reid’s Patriots Blog

Tom Brady gets a chance to go up against another team that thinks they have the blueprint to beat he and the offense. He beat the Jets and Dallas and here come the G-men with their strong front four. As long as the offense is on the field more than 20:38, they should win this game.

Walt Perkins, WBZ NewsRadio 1030

The New England Patriots, under the direction of Bill Belichick, do not lose back-to-back games very often. This week will be no different.

Although the Patriots were brought down a peg in Pittsburgh, they still were in a position to pull out a victory if they had made a few more plays.

The Giants bring a pass rush that leads the league (one more sack than the Steelers). It is the same pass rush that swamped Tom Brady in Super Bowl XLII and kept the Patriots from completing an undefeated season.

Justin Tuck and his teammates will be looking to make this Sunday a living hell for Brady and his offensive line.

The Patriots may try to off-set that pass rush by establishing a running game. The Giants have struggled this season trying to contain the run, giving up 130 yards per game. This could be a big game for BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Stevan Ridley and Kevin Faulk.

One thing the Patriots cannot afford to do is fall behind, forcing Brady into passing situations. That’s when the Giants front is at its fearsome best.

For the Patriots to succeed on Sunday, draws and screens may be the order of the day.

As for that Patriots defense, it is getting better, despite giving up 365 yards through the air in Pittsburgh. I don’t think a banged-up Giants offense will do too much damage.

New England 27, NY Giants 17

Tune in to the Patriots-Giants game on 98.5 The Sports Hub Sunday at 4:15pm. Pregame coverage kicks on WBZ-TV at 11:30am with Patriots Gameday, with the Hub’s coverage beginning at 1pm. After the game, tune in to the Hub for the Patriots Postgame show, and to MY TV38 for Patriots Fifth Quarter.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin spoke to the media Friday, confirming that running back Ahmad Bradshaw would not undergo surgery after cracking a bone in his foot.

Bradshaw missed Friday’s practice and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s meeting with the New England Patriots. He is joined on the injury report by a host of other important contributors.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is questionable for Sunday amid concerns that he might have a concussion. Pierre-Paul underwent concussion tests after a practice collision resulted in a headache, and missed Friday’s practice.

Hakeem Nicks (hamstring) also missed Friday’s practice, riding the bike instead. He is listed as questionable for Sunday, as is fullback Henry Hynoski (neck).

First-round draft choice Prince Amukamara (questionable) will travel with the team this weekend and could see his first game action of the season. He has missed the first eight weeks of the season with a broken foot suffered in August.

Center David Baas (knee) is listed as doubtful.

New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw has a cracked bone in his right foot and is considering surgery that could potentially be season-ending and possibly devastating to fantasy owners, according to sources.

Bradshaw suffered the injury in his right foot in the third quarter of the Giants’ 20-17 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, then left the game to get X-rays. He returned in the fourth quarter after the X-rays showed no structural damage and the injury was just an aggravation.

The fifth-year running back developed a crack in the fifth metatarsal bone of each foot in 2009, but played through the pain to rush for 778 yards in 15 games. He had offseason surgery to put a screw in each foot, as well as to repair bone spurs from his right ankle. He returned in 2010 and ran for a career-high 1,235 yards and eight touchdowns.

It’s unclear at this point how long Bradshaw will be sidelined.

The Newark-Star Ledger reported that a source informed of his injury said he is out indefinitely and that he has been telling his teammates he might only be out for two weeks.

The New York Daily News reported a team source said it will be “several weeks, at least” before Bradshaw is back.

However, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the injury is not considered serious and that Bradshaw “should play Sunday” against the Patriots. The source also said that surgery will not be necessary, and coach Tom Coughlin said no decision has been made regarding the need for surgery at some point.

Nevertheless, if Bradshaw does decide to undergo surgery, the timetable will most likely be longer than just a game or two weeks.

Whether or not Bradshaw plays this Sunday against the New England Patriots, disgruntled backup running back Brandon Jacobs will carry most of the load. Jacobs has struggled this season and was booed in the game against Miami because he gained only 10 yards on four carries. Despite his performance, Jacobs vowed earlier this week that he would change and score more touchdowns going forward.

Third-running back D.J. Ware (45 yards on 14 carries this season) should see an increased workload too, especially in passing situations and as a receiver out of the backfield.

Bradshaw has suffered foot injuries in the past and played through them. After Sunday’s game against the Dolphins, he even said that he thinks the injury will be fine. But all signs point to him being lost sooner or later.

Bradshaw hasn’t run for many yards this season (just 440), but he is an asset in the passing game. He’s a good receiver out of the backfield and is regarded as one of the very best running backs in the league in blitz pickup and pass protection. The Giants will have to replace more than his rushing yards if he has to miss significant time.

Also, with the schedule getting much more difficult the rest of the way, the Giants aren’t going to get by running the ball as ineffectively as they have so far and asking Eli Manning to carry the offense. At the same time, because the Giants have been running the ball so ineffectively and are still 5-2, they can still win without Bradshaw, though it will be a little tougher.
