The New York Giants and the New York Jets may share a home, but there’s no brotherly love between the two teams. The G-men battle Fireman Ed and Co. on a Saturday night game that will have a huge impact on whether either team makes it into the playoffs.

The Giants (7-7) battle the Jets (8-6) at the Meadowlands at 1 p.m. on FOX for an afternoon Christmas Eve showdown. The Giants desperately need a win to take over the Dallas Cowboys (8-6) who currently sit atop the NFC East. The Jets are also second in their division to one of the most-winning teams in the NFL, the New England Patriots (11-3).

If the Jets stand any chance of making it to the playoffs, they’ll need to sneak into a wildcard game by winning a large majority of their remaining games. Though the crosstown game is big for the Giants, the Dallas Cowboys have failed to clinch a playoff seed so far. That means that the game is a little less dire for the Giants.

Both teams face are battling injuries on their roster and will need second-line teammates to step up. The Jets offense is banged up. Jets players Plaxico Burress (WR), Santonio Holmes (WR), Mark Sanchez (QB), Shonn Greene (RB) are all listed as probably for the game and are forced to shake off a variety of injuries.

The Giants face less injuries, but more serious ones. Giants’ players Osi Umenyiora (DE) has been out for several weeks, which has weakened the defensive pressure the Giants have been able to put on their opponents. In addition to Umenyiora’s absence, Mario Manningham (WR) is listed as doubtful with a knee injury. Two running backs on the team are injured, too. Ahmad Bradshaw, the power back is listed as probably with a foot injury. Danny Ware, the more agile back, is injured with knee issues and is listed as probable.

The showdown in the Meadowlands is sure to be full of fireworks. With these to New York teams on the ropes, they’ll likely pull out all the stops to sneak into the playoffs. If either team makes it, whether they’re actually able to compete is an entirely different story.

Just like that, the Giants’ four-game losing streak was done. And the NFC East race is cracked open, with New York reclaiming the inside track

Just like that, the Giants’ four-game losing streak was done. And the NFC East race is cracked open, with New York reclaiming the inside track.

“We needed to have a locker room celebration,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “We were starving for this.”

New York’s recent skid was filled mostly with narrow losses to division leaders. The Giants (7-6) appeared headed to another setback trailing 34-22 with 5:41 left, but a series of clutch plays on their part and meltdowns by Dallas changed everything. The teams are tied, with the Cowboys headed to the Meadowlands for a season-ending rematch on New Year’s Day.

“We knew what was on the line,” Cowboys linebacker Bradie James said. “But those guys made one more play than we did.”

Dallas has gone from winning four straight to losing two in a row, both in dramatic, frustrating fashion that involved missed kicks by rookie Dan Bailey, who’d been so good for so long this season. The Cowboys also lost running back DeMarco Murray to a broken right ankle, ending his record-setting rookie season.

“We certainly know we’ve got our work cut out for us,” team owner Jerry Jones said in a brief statement.

Neither team led by more than five points for most of this back-and-forth game until Tony Romo threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Dez Bryant with no one else around. He strutted into the end zone, putting Dallas up 34-22 with 5:41 left.

Yet instead of that ending the excitement, the fun was just beginning.

Manning — who’d already pulled out five wins in the fourth quarter this season — mounted an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jake Ballard. The play had to withstand a video review to make sure he really got the ball past the front of the goal line before his knee landed inches shy of the stripe.

New York’s defense followed with a three-and-out, and the Giants got another break when Dallas’ usually reliable punter, Mat McBriar, had a 33-yarder, letting Manning take over at his 42 with 2:12 left.

Two penalties on the Cowboys’ defense helped, as did completions of 21 and 18 yards to Ballard. Brandon Jacobs scored on a 1-yard run with 51 seconds left and D.J. Ware followed with the 2-point conversion.

Romo still had 46 seconds left. He hit Miles Austin for gains of 22 and 23 yards to set up Bailey for a 47-yard field goal that would force overtime. The rookie who’d made four winning kicks, but was coming off a game-losing debacle the previous week, split the uprights — only it didn’t count because Coughlin called a timeout.

On the do-over, Bailey’s kick was clipped by the outstretched arms of Pierre-Paul. He’d been a disruption all night, sacking Romo for a safety early in the game and forcing a fumble in the second quarter.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Never count out Eli Manning and the New York Giants — not in a game, or in the division race.

Down by 12 late in the fourth quarter of a game they had to win for a realistic chance to make the playoffs, the Giants put together two touchdown drives in the final 3:41 and Jean Pierre-Paul preserved it with a blocked field goal for a 37-34 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

“I rushed the center, put my hands up and got the block,” Pierre-Paul said.

Manning was 27 of 47 for 400 yards and two touchdowns. It was his third 400-yard outing this season, and the club racked up 510 yards, its most since having 512 in December 2009.

Jacobs ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Hakeem Nicks had seven catches for 154 yards, including an early 64-yarder. Mario Manningham had two catches for 62 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown reception.

“Guys stepped up and made some big plays,” Manning said. “It won’t mean anything unless we finish the season strong. That’s the mindset. We can’t relax now or feel great about ourselves.”

Romo was 21 of 31 for 321 yards with four touchdowns, two in the fourth quarter.

Laurent Robinson caught four passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, with a 74-yarder. Austin, who’d missed the previous six weeks with a hamstring injury, caught four passes for 63 yards with a touchdown.

Felix Jones ran for 106 yards, and caught six passes for 31 yards. He started the season as Dallas’ featured running back, and will end it that way, too, now that Murray is gone. The rookie got his foot twisted awkwardly at the end of an 8-yard run in the first quarter. He finished his season with 897 yards, with a franchise-record 253 coming in one game.

“This one’s going to hurt, it’s going to sting, but we’ve got to figure out how to do things a little better and play our best game of the season next week,” Romo said. “We need to get a win next week and get back going.”

The Cowboys have lost six straight Sunday night games. They are 0-3 against the Giants at Cowboys Stadium. Romo also continued his trend of winning in November, then slumping in December.

Notes: New York RB Ahmad Bradshaw did not start as punishment for breaking an unspecified team rule. He finished with 12 yards on eight carries, all in the second half. … Romo went over 20,000 yards passing for his career, joining Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach and Danny White as the only Cowboys to do so. … Cowboys C Phil Costa sustained a concussion, pushing rookie Kevin Kowalski into action for the first time. His snaps were OK, but he seemed flummoxed early in the final drive.

That’s all the news for today.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Eli Manning threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Marion Manningham and the New York Giants had a 22-20 lead over the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys after three quarters on Sunday night.

New York came in with a four-game losing streak, but with a win over Dallas would match the Cowboys for the NFC East lead with three games left. The division rivals play again New Year’s Day at the Meadowlands in the regular-season finale.

The Cowboys lost rookie sensation running back DeMarco Murray because of a fractured right ankle. He got hurt while being tackled at the end of an 8-yard run in the first quarter when his foot got twisted under a defender.

Murray has 897 yards rushing, 111 shy of breaking Tony Dorsett’s team rookie record that has held since 1977. NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith ran for 937 yards as a rookie in 1990.

Manning was 17-of-31 passing for 257 yards through three quarters. The touchdown to Manningham came with 4½ minutes left in the third quarter.

The point differential in the game came when Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was spun around by defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and fell in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter.

Pierre-Paul, filling in for injured Osi Umenyiora, also forced a fumble when he stripped Felix Jones just before halftime. That led to a field goal for the Giants.

In addition to Murray, the Cowboys also lot center Phil Costa (concussion) and safety Barry Church (right shoulder) in the game.

Giants linebacker Travis Beckum was out knocked out of the game by a chest injury.

Dan Bailey kicked two 49-yard field goals for the Cowboys, while Romo threw for two touchdowns and surpassed 20,000 career yards passing.

Bailey’s first field goal came with 15 seconds left in the first half for a 17-15 halftime lead. He added another 49-yarder for the only Dallas score in the third quarter.

Dallas had won four in a row before losing 19-13 in overtime a week ago at Arizona, when Bailey missed a 49-yard field goal attempt at the end of regulation.

Bailey’s miss came after Cowboys coach Jason Garrett had called timeout just before Bailey had kicked a ball through the uprights for an apparent victory.

Romo was 14-of-20 for 135 yards through three quarters. Jones rushed 13 times for 102 yards.

After going three-and-out on their first drive of the game, the Cowboys started their second possession on their own 8.

On the second play, Pierre-Paul got pressure on Romo, spinning the quarterback around and causing him to fall backward into the end zone.

After the Giants got the ball on the free kick, Manning hit Hakeem Nicks in stride for a 64-yard completion to the Dallas 5. But New York bogged down there and had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes for a 5-0 lead.

Romo became the Cowboys’ fourth 20,000-yard passer with a 12-yard touchdown pass to John Phillips. Romo rolled to his right and then threw a screen to Phillips on the left side for the tight end’s first career touchdown.

The other 20,000-yard passers for the Cowboys are Hall of Fame quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, and Danny White.

Romo hasn’t really had any good memories against the Giants in Cowboys Stadium, where New York won the first regular season game played there two years ago. Romo sustained a broken collarbone at home against New York last season and he didn’t play again.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Never count out
Eli Manning
and the
New York Giants
– not in a game, or in the division race.

Down by 12 late in the fourth quarter of a game they had to win for a realistic chance to make the playoffs, the Giants put
together two touchdown drives in the final 3:41 and Jean Pierre-Paul preserved it with a blocked field goal for a 37-34 victory
over the
Dallas Cowboys
on Sunday night.

Just like that, the Giants’ four-game losing streak was done. And the NFC East race is cracked open, with New York reclaiming
the inside track.

“We needed to have a locker room celebration,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “We were starving for this.”

New York’s recent skid was filled mostly with narrow losses to division leaders. The Giants (7-6) appeared headed to another
setback trailing 34-22 with 5:41 left, but a series of clutch plays on their part and meltdowns by Dallas changed everything.
The teams are tied, with the Cowboys headed to the Meadowlands for a season-ending rematch on New Year’s Day.

“We knew what was on the line,” Cowboys linebacker
Bradie James
said. “But those guys made one more play than we did.”

Dallas has gone from winning four straight to losing two in a row, both in dramatic, frustrating fashion that involved missed
kicks by rookie
Dan Bailey
, who’d been so good for so long this season. The Cowboys also lost running back
DeMarco Murray
to a broken right ankle, ending his record-setting rookie season.

“We certainly know we’ve got our work cut out for us,” team owner Jerry Jones said in a brief statement.

Neither team led by more than five points for most of this back-and-forth game until
Tony Romo
threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to
Dez Bryant
with no one else around. He strutted into the end zone, putting Dallas up 34-22 with 5:41 left.

Yet instead of that ending the excitement, the fun was just beginning.

Manning – who’d already pulled out five wins in the fourth quarter this season – mounted an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped
by an 8-yard touchdown pass to
Jake Ballard
. The play had to withstand a video review to make sure he really got the ball past the front of the goal line before his
knee landed inches shy of the stripe.

New York’s defense followed with a three-and-out, and the Giants got another break when Dallas’ usually reliable punter,
Mat McBriar
, had a 33-yarder, letting Manning take over at his 42 with 2:12 left.

Two penalties on the Cowboys’ defense helped, as did completions of 21 and 18 yards to Ballard.
Brandon Jacobs
scored on a 1-yard run with 51 seconds left and D.J. Ware followed with the 2-point conversion.

Romo still had 46 seconds left. He hit
Miles Austin
for gains of 22 and 23 yards to set up Bailey for a 47-yard field goal that would force overtime. The rookie who’d made four
winning kicks, but was coming off a game-losing debacle the previous week, split the uprights – only it didn’t count because
Coughlin called a timeout.

On the do-over, Bailey’s kick was clipped by the outstretched arms of Pierre-Paul. He’d been a disruption all night, sacking
Romo for a safety early in the game and forcing a fumble in the second quarter.

“I rushed the center, put my hands up and got the block,” Pierre-Paul said.

Manning was 27 of 47 for 400 yards and two touchdowns. It was his third 400-yard outing this season, and the club racked up
510 yards, its most since having 512 in December 2009.

Jacobs ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
Hakeem Nicks
had seven catches for 154 yards, including an early 64-yarder.
Mario Manningham
had two catches for 62 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown reception.

“Guys stepped up and made some big plays,” Manning said. “It won’t mean anything unless we finish the season strong. That’s
the mindset. We can’t relax now or feel great about ourselves.”

Romo was 21 of 31 for 321 yards with four touchdowns, two in the fourth quarter.

      Laurent Robinson
caught four passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, with a 74-yarder. Austin, who’d missed the previous six weeks with a hamstring
injury, caught four passes for 63 yards with a touchdown.

      Felix Jones
ran for 106 yards, and caught six passes for 31 yards. He started the season as Dallas’ featured running back, and will end
it that way, too, now that Murray is gone. The rookie got his foot twisted awkwardly at the end of an 8-yard run in the first
quarter. He finished his season with 897 yards, with a franchise-record 253 coming in one game.

“This one’s going to hurt, it’s going to sting, but we’ve got to figure out how to do things a little better and play our
best game of the season next week,” Romo said. “We need to get a win next week and get back going.”

The Cowboys have lost six straight Sunday night games. They are 0-3 against the Giants at Cowboys Stadium. Romo also continued
his trend of winning in November, then slumping in December.

      Notes: New York RB
Ahmad Bradshaw
did not start as punishment for breaking an unspecified team rule. He finished with 12 yards on eight carries, all in the
second half. … Romo went over 20,000 yards passing for his career, joining Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach and Danny White as
the only Cowboys to do so. … Cowboys C
Phil Costa
sustained a concussion, pushing rookie
Kevin Kowalski
into action for the first time. His snaps were OK, but he seemed flummoxed early in the final drive.

By BARRY WILNER
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Tom Coughlin didn’t mince words.

“This is as big a disappointment as we have had around here in a long time,” Coughlin said after his New York Giants’ poor showing in a 17-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that dropped his team into a tie with Dallas atop the NFC East. “I didn’t like the way we played.”

New York (6-4) was outplayed on both lines, allowed the Eagles (4-6) to drive 80 yards on 18 plays, taking up 8:51, to get the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter, and rushed for all of 29 yards Sunday night.

“We have no first downs to show, no yardage to show, we have no rushing average with 29 yards, which is about as pathetic as it can get.”

Their second straight loss came against an undermanned Eagles squad missing Michael Vick and Jeremy Maclin. Even though the Giants had three interceptions of Vince Young, they couldn’t slow him or the Eagles on that final drive, when Philly converted six third downs, including on the winning 8-yard pass to Riley Cooper with 2:45 remaining.

The Giants also couldn’t protect Eli Manning, who was sacked three times and hurried on many other throws.

“We just never got a rhythm at all,” said Manning, who is having an outstanding year but struggled all night against Philly. “It wasn’t a good game. We didn’t have our best effort out there.”

Philadelphia blew five games in the fourth quarter this season, but was the better team down the stretch this time. But even after that lengthy drive, the Giants had a shot to tie it. Manning, who tied it with a 24-yard TD pass to Victor Cruz earlier in the quarter, drove the Giants from their 10 to the Eagles 21, with the final 47 yards coming on a catch-and-run by Cruz with 1:25 to play.

Manning stepped out of the pocket on the next play and was hit from behind by Jason Babin and fumbled. Derek Landi recovered at the 26, sending the Giants to their second straight excruciating loss at the Meadowlands to the Eagles.

“As I was going through that thinking process,” Manning said of looking for his secondary receivers, “that is when I got hit from behind. I need to do a better job holding onto the ball in that circumstance.”

Young overcame his mistakes with a decisive, memorable drive.

“It’s definitely a big win,” said Young, who went 23 of 36 for 258 yards, two touchdowns and those three interceptions. “You see the excitement and the smiles on the guys and that’s what we need, what we have to have.”

Philadelphia converted six third-down plays with DeSean Jackson setting up the first-and-goal with a 10-yard catch to the 10, and Young capping it with his second touchdown pass of the game to a wide-open Cooper, who came in without a catch this season.

“We were taking our time, making plays and the guys came up with big plays on third down,” Young said.

Jackson, benched for last week’s game for missing a team meeting, finished with six catches for 88 yards. Cooper had five receptions for 75 yards, while LeSean McCoy added 113 yards rushing, 60 coming on a late run that iced the game.

“Vince, stepping in for the great Michael Vick, that’s a tough thing to do and he did it and the guys rallied around him,” coach Andy Reid said. “The offensive line and defensive line played well, the offensive line had a huge challenge when it counted and they were able to put some things together.”

Last December, the Eagles rallied late to beat New York 38-31 in a game that Philadelphia rallied from 21 points down.

While Young made several big plays, his third interception was the most costly. Aaron Ross picked it off in the end zone on a second-and-9 from the New York 16 with Philadelphia up 10-3 late in the third quarter.

Cruz’s tying TD was set up when Manning rolled out and found Hakeem Nicks for a 47-yard gain on third down to the Eagles 24.

Manning was 18 of 35 for 264 yards, and Cruz had six catches for 128 yards.

The first half was typical of an Eagles-Giants meeting: chippy, intense, hard-fought and, not surprisingly, ugly.

The defenses dominated, and Jackson was caught taunting the Giants in more ways than one, including a penalty that cost the Eagles a 50-yard pass completion.

Jackson set up both Eagles scores in the first half. He caught a 32-yard pass early in the second quarter to set up a 33-yard field goal by Alex Henery and then brought back excruciating memories from last season with a 51-yard punt return that was a carbon copy of his winning 65-yard punt return on the final play of the Eagles’ 38-31 Meadowlands Miracle.

What made the return so eerie was that Jackson fielded Steve Weatherford’s punt at his 35, circled right and then ran down the sideline in front of the Giants’ bench — the same thing he did last season. The only difference was Weatherford pushed him out of bounds at the 14, and Matt Dodge was the punter last season.

It didn’t matter. One play later, Young found former Giants receiver Steve Smith cutting under the zone and he easily outran linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka into the end zone.

Manning had enough time to get the Giants on the board. A 21-yard pass to Cruz and 10-yarder to D.J. Ware on a play in which he suffered a concussion set up Lawrence Tynes’ 48-yard field goal.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Tom Coughlin didn’t mince words.

“This is as big a disappointment as we have had around here in a long
the first-and-goal with a 10-yard catch to the 10, and Young capping it with his
second touchdown pass of the game to a wide-open Cooper, who came in without a
catch this season.

“We were taking our time, making plays and the guys came up with big plays
on third down,” Young said.

Jackson, benched for last week’s game for missing a team meeting, finished
with six catches for 88 yards. Cooper had five receptions for 75 yards, while
LeSean McCoy(notes) added 113 yards rushing, 60 coming on a late run that iced the
game.

“Vince, stepping in for the great Michael Vick, that’s a tough thing to do
and he did it and the guys rallied around him,” coach Andy Reid said. “The
offensive line and defensive line played well, the offensive line had a huge
challenge when it counted and they were able to put some things together.”

Last December, the Eagles rallied late to beat New York 38-31 in a game that
Philadelphia rallied from 21 points down.

While Young made several big plays, his third interception was the most
costly. Aaron Ross(notes) picked it off in the end zone on a second-and-9 from the New
York 16 with Philadelphia up 10-3 late in the third quarter.

Cruz’s tying TD was set up when Manning rolled out and found Hakeem Nicks(notes)
for a 47-yard gain on third down to the Eagles 24.

Manning was 18 of 35 for 264 yards, and Cruz had six catches for 128 yards.

The first half was typical of an Eagles-Giants meeting: chippy, intense,
hard-fought and, not surprisingly, ugly.

The defenses dominated, and Jackson was caught taunting the Giants in more
ways than one, including a penalty that cost the Eagles a 50-yard pass
completion.

Jackson set up both Eagles scores in the first half. He caught a 32-yard
pass early in the second quarter to set up a 33-yard field goal by Alex Henery(notes)
and then brought back excruciating memories from last season with a 51-yard punt
return that was a carbon copy of his winning 65-yard punt return on the final
play of the Eagles’ 38-31 Meadowlands Miracle.

What made the return so eerie was that Jackson fielded Steve Weatherford’s(notes)
punt at his 35, circled right and then ran down the sideline in front of the
Giants’ bench—the same thing he did last season. The only difference was
Weatherford pushed him out of bounds at the 14, and Matt Dodge(notes) was the punter
last season.

It didn’t matter. One play later, Young found former Giants receiver Steve
Smith cutting under the zone and he easily outran linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka(notes)
into the end zone.

Manning had enough time to get the Giants on the board. A 21-yard pass to
Cruz and 10-yarder to D.J. Ware(notes) on a play in which he suffered a concussion set
up Lawrence Tynes’(notes) 48-yard field goal.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Giants had their chance to bury the Philadelphia Eagles a year ago and failed miserably.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants had their chance to bury the Philadelphia Eagles a year ago and failed miserably.

Who can forget the Meadowlands Meltdown in December, or if you’re an Eagles fan, the Miracle at the Meadowlands?

With first place in the NFC East on the line, Eli Manning and the Giants opened a 21-point fourth-quarter lead, only to see Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson steal their crown with one of the most improbable comebacks in NFL history.

Vick led the team to three touchdowns to tie the game late and Jackson won it returning a punt that was supposed to be kicked out of bounds 65 yards on the final play of regulation.

Remember either Giants coach Tom Coughlin slamming his clipboard to the turf as Jackson ran past the Giants’ bench? Or Jackson tiptoeing along the goal line to eat the final seconds on the clock before scoring.

It was uplifting and thrilling for the Eagles, and downright heartbreaking for the Giants, who missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

Less than a year later, the Giants (6-3) get another chance to bury to the Eagles (3-6), and this one seems just as improbable.

Few expected New York to have a one-game lead in the division and even fewer had any idea that Philadelphia’s ‘Dream Team’ would be this close to missing the playoffs with seven games remaining in the regular season. The comeback they need now might be even bigger than last season.

“Our mindset is just to find a way to win the game,” Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said. “We are just trying to take it one game at a time and have a chance to get in the playoffs and make some good of our season. We are just taking each game at a time. We can’t think about our record or where we are at, we just need to win a game.”

This one might be tough because Vick broke two ribs in last week’s loss to Arizona and his status for the game is uncertain. Vince Young and Mike Kafka are the backups.

Jackson also is expected back in the lineup after being benched last week for missing a team meeting.

Coming off tough 27-20 loss at San Francisco that cut their NFC East lead over Dallas to a game, the Giants are preparing for Vick.

“This has been a big rivalry as long as I have been here, and I am sure it goes on longer than that,” defensive end Dave Tollefson said. “There are two agendas on each team, us trying to get back in the win column and get some control of the NFC East, and they are trying to get the ball rolling to make a push. It’s huge. It’s always something, isn’t it? When are the Eagles and Giants even going to play and it ain’t something?”

Five of the Eagles’ six losses have been by seven points or less, including five games in which they have blown leads in the fourth quarter. One of those losses was a 29-16 defeat to the Giants in which Eli Manning threw two of his four touchdowns in the final 15 minutes.

Since the current playoff format was instituted in 1990, 15 clubs with a losing record after nine games have made the playoffs. Only three of those teams had 3-6 records, the last being Jacksonville in 1996.

The poor record has put coach Andy Reid under a microscope in a season where much was expected after the team stocked its roster by signing free agents, the most notable being cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

“I am going to tell you the same thing I told our media, I don’t worry about all that,” Reid said. “The only thing I would worry about is preparing our team to play the New York Giants. That is it. I don’t worry about anything else past that.”

Receiver Hakeem Nicks said the Giants aren’t looking at this game as a chance to bury the Eagles.

“We have to look at it like this is a hungry team coming out here,” he said. “It’s a rivalry game. We know they’re going to come out there ready to play and take everything away from us as well.”

Guard David Diehl also laughed when asked about ending the Eagles’ hopes.

“This is a team that talked about playing us again after the last game in Philadelphia and what better way for them to get their season back on track than beating us,” Diehl said. “We know it’s going to be a fight. We know everybody thinks this should be an easy one, that’s bull. We’re not falling for that. We respect them and we expect a 60-minute fight. Right now everyone is counting them out. We’re not.”

Just the memory of last year is enough to convince the Giants to never count out the Eagles.

“I am sure I said this before, but that game will stick with me for the rest of my life,” Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said. “Yes, it does stick with me, but you can ease some of that pain by getting a win on Sunday night.”

The Eagles are having a better year than the Giants in most statistics, with their biggest problem being 21 turnovers, including seven in the red zone. They also have been outscored 74-27 in the fourth quarter.

McCoy, who has scored a touchdown in each of the Eagles’ nine games, is leading the NFC in rushing with 906 yards, and is second in the league, only 11 yards behind Fred Jackson of Buffalo. The Eagles are averaging 418.2 yards on offence.

The Giants are close to playing first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara for the first time this season. The rookie cornerback has not been limited in practice for the first time since breaking his foot in training camp.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking pretty far up at the New York Giants right now in the NFC East.

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking pretty far up at the New York Giants right now in the NFC East. The only thing that Eagles fans like myself have to hope for is that the 6-2 Giants collapse under a very tough schedule – even though some Philadelphia wins will be needed as well.

New York seemed more likely to collapse against tougher competition before it rallied over the New England Patriots on Nov. 6. Although there are still question marks around the Giants and Eli Manning(notes), coach Tom Coughlin has once again put them in a position to do damage – despite not being the nicest guy around.

In fact, a new survey from the Sporting News on Nov. 11 revealed that Coughlin is the NFL coach that players would least like to play for. Despite having a Super Bowl ring to his credit, Coughlin is even more unpopular in this survey than the Miami Dolphins’ Tony Sparano – who likely won’t have a job for much longer. When more players want to play for a doomed coach than one who has a 6-2 record and a Super Bowl, it certainly says something.

Of course, wins aren’t the whole story considering Coughlin’s iron fist and unbendable attitude. The Eagles helped make him look worse after Miracle at the Meadowlands II last December, as DeSean Jackson’s(notes) game-ending punt return made Coughlin scream at punter Matt Dodge seconds later. If one gets on his bad side, there is certainly little chance to escape his wrath no matter what the setting.

It seems that Coughlin’s intensity and the Giants’ difficult periods put his job in danger year after year. The Eagles have that same problem with Andy Reid, minus the intensity and red face. However, while the backlash against Reid just gets worse, especially during this season, Coughlin always seems to find a way to rally from the brink. After all, he saved his job by actually winning the Super Bowl four years ago, unlike other NFC East coaches so far.

Coughlin’s tactics may seem more and more out of place in an NFL that doesn’t have as many hard-line coaches as in years past. Yet they have kept him around in New York since 2004 and they helped him take the Jacksonville Jaguars to two AFC title games years earlier.

While no one may want to play for Coughlin, the Giants certainly win for him enough so that he can keep torturing players for a while longer. Unfortunately, he is doing that well enough right now to make the Eagles’ quest for a miraculous division title that much more difficult.

As such, Philadelphia will need to hope that a tough New York schedule brings the Giants down, since Coughlin’s attitude still isn’t going to do it. The Giants may not always like playing for him, but he just keeps getting enough out of them so that their frustration doesn’t show in the win column.

The relationship between a fan and their favorite NFL team is a tumultuous one. New York Giants fans have not been insulated from embarrassing plays; there have been many. Sure, we have three Super Bowl rings, and arguably the greatest playoff run ever in 2007. But we have had our share of paper bag my head moments. And here they are in a very painful and specific order:

5. First Play Blunder, September 4, 1995

The Giants must have been excited when they opened the 2005 season against the hated Dallas Cowboys; so excited, that they forgot to tackle Dallas running back Emmitt Smith as he took the first play from scrimmage 60 yards for a score. The Giants set the tone for the season as they ended an unmemorable season at 5-11.

4. Feely Thrice, November 27, 2005

Third time’s a charm, except if you are 2005 Giants field goal kicker Jay Feely(notes) . After missing a 40 yarder at the end of regulation; Feely missed a 54 yard field goal in overtime. Yet, Giants coach Tom Coughlin wasn’t ready to give up on Feely’s boot. When the opportunity came for a second chance to win in overtime, Feely’s name was called. Feely changed it up and this time fell short from 45 yards. If you’re wondering what happened next; the Seahawks actually made a field goal to end the game.

3. The Miracle at the Meadowlands II, December 19, 2010

Matt Dodge(notes) ; the punter who every fan knew should be cut. Tied at 31, Dodge had one job: kick the ball away from Eagles punt returner Desean Jackson(notes) . Instead, Dodge chose to punt the ball directly to Jackson, who returned the ball 65 yards to house. The return not only sent the Giants home losers, but may have cost them a playoff berth. See the play at NFL.com.

2. San Francisco Treat, January 5, 2003

We are blessed with many San Francisco 49er holdover fans in New York from the Joe Montana/Steve Young era, and they had their day in 2002. After blowing a 38 -14 lead, the Giants still had a chance to win the NFC Wildcard game with a late field goal. Trey Junkin, a 19 year NFL veteran, botched the snap which skipped to the left of placeholder Matt Allen. Although it was only third down, Allen panicked and heaved the ball down field. The 49ers’ win became the second greatest comeback in playoff history.

1. The Miracle at the Meadowlands, November 19, 1978

With Joe Pisarcik at the helm, the Giants met division rival Philadelphia at the Meadowlands. Few remember the Giants were fighting to get to .500, as they came in to the game with a 5-6 record. With one minute left in the game, and a 17 – 12 lead, all the Giants had to do was kneel the ball. Instead, offensive coordinator Bob Gibson called on Larry Csonka to run the ball. Something with the handoff went wrong and the ball ended up on the ground. Future NFL coach Herm Edwards scooped it up for six and one of the NFL’s most memorable plays, except if you’re a Giants fan.

By ROB MAADDI
PHILADELPHIA — Maybe the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants should settle their differences in a steel cage.

The two NFC East rivals simply don’t like each other, and they’ve been going at it verbally like WWE stars. Because battle royals aren’t allowed in the NFL, the teams will have to fight it out on the field Sunday in Philadelphia’s home opener.

“It’s a lot of intensity, a lot of trash-talking and a lot of guys on the field that just hate each other,” Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel said. “They just want to beat each other’s head in. It’s very competitive and has a long line of history behind it. It’s an ongoing rivalry that has a lot to it.”

While the labor lockout kept players off the practice field during the summer, Eagles running back LeSean McCoy and Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora were busy taking shots at each other on Twitter.

McCoy said Umenyiora was “overrated” and “soft” and ranked the two-time Pro Bowl pick as third best on New York’s defensive line. Umenyiora retaliated by calling McCoy a “girl” and referred to him as Lady Gaga.

“I hate him, he hates me, period,” Umenyiora told the Newark Star-Ledger in June. “There’s a real hatred toward Philly and there’s a real hatred for them toward us.”

Umenyiora may not get a chance to tackle McCoy this week because he’s still listed as day to day after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee early in training camp.

His absence won’t decrease the animosity between the teams. Both clubs enter with a 1-1 record. The Eagles have won the last six meetings, including an incredible 38-31 comeback victory last December at the Meadowlands that helped them secure the NFC East title.

Michael Vick rallied Philadelphia from a 21-point deficit with 8:17 left, and the Eagles won it on DeSean Jackson’s 65-yard punt return for a touchdown on the last play.

“It is what it is,” Giants safety Antrel Rolle said. “It took place last year. It’s not something that we might ever forget, but at the same time, it’s a new year.”

Rolle joined in on the trash-talking earlier in the week when he said in a radio interview he wants to cover Jackson one-on-one because he’s done it before and “could handle it again.”

Jackson had nothing to say about Rolle’s boast, but wide receiver Jeremy Maclin took a jab at him and the rest of the Giants.

“A lot of times when people talk, they’re either insecure or they’re scared, so you guys choose,” Maclin said. “It’s a new year. We understand that we have to go out there and play. On the other hand, they have no business talking because they haven’t done anything in the last six times. That speaks for itself. I don’t know what he’s trying to do, but he’s not going to intimidate, not going to scare nobody in this locker room.”

The Eagles are hoping Vick plays after suffering a concussion in the second half of a 35-31 loss at Atlanta. Vick practiced Thursday, and it appeared he would be ready to go unless he had a setback.

Of course, the Giants said they expect to face Vick instead of backups Mike Kafka and Vince Young. Coach Tom Coughlin said he didn’t even plan to prepare for a different quarterback.

“He’s the best player to give them an opportunity to play their best ball,” Rolle said. “I’m the type of guy, I like going against the best. If I don’t go against the best, a win’s a win, we’ll always take a win, but it’s always better when they have their better guys on the field.”

Other than Vick, the Eagles have been mostly healthy. The Giants, on the other hand, have been hit hard by injuries.

They just lost receiver Domenik Hixon for the rest of the season after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the 28-16 win over St. Louis. Wideout Mario Manningham sustained a concussion in that game, and his status is uncertain.

New York already lost starting cornerback Terrell Thomas and starting middle linebacker Jonathan Goff for the season with major knee injuries. Rookie defensive tackle Marvin Austin, the team’s second-round draft pick, is also out for the year with a chest muscle problem.

“You keep going,” quarterback Eli Manning said. “You keep preparing. If everything was easy and went perfectly, it kind of takes some of the fun out of it. It always makes it a great opportunity for some guys to step up and show what they’re made of and how they can go out there and make plays.”

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ——

The New York Giants will open training camp on Friday at their team headquarters near New Meadowlands Stadium.

The Giants made the announcement late Monday afternoon, hours after the NFLPA executive committee and the 32 player representatives from the league’s teams recommended to players that they vote for the 10-year deal which will end the 4 1 / 2-month lockout.

Earlier in the day, workers began removing roughly 6-foot long blue slants from around the practice fields at the Giants’ facility, so fans will be able to see the fields and watch practices.

The team plans to erect stands outside the fences of the practice fields for seating.

The Giants have held camp at the University at Albany since 1996. But they opted to train at home this year because of the uncertainty surrounding the labor dispute.

What do you guys think about this.
