EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants boasted that Rueben Randle was NFL-ready after they took the LSU receiver in the second round of the draft, and as the Super Bowl champions opened rookie minicamp Friday, he didn’t disappoint.
Randle went high to catch a pass along the sideline, and he later burned third-round draft choice Jayron Hosley on a “go” pattern in the morning session of Friday’s camp. Randle showed signs he might be able to replace Super Bowl hero Mario Manningham, who left to sign with the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent.
Former LSU signal-caller Ryan Perrilloux, who has been on the Giants’ practice squad, has no doubt about Randle’s NFL prospects.
“He is huge — 6-foot-3, 210 ( pounds). A speedy guy, real good in and out of breaks,” Perrilloux said. “Like I said, he’s the kind of guy a quarterback can rely on because he has all that athletic ability that you need. When you get in trouble, you never go wrong just throwing his way.”
Randle, who caught 53 passes for 917 yards and eight touchdowns last season, said he’s excited to have a chance to play with a two-time Super Bowl MVP like Eli Manning.
“As a receiver, you want someone who can get you the ball because you work so hard to get open,” Randle said. “Coming in and playing with Eli, who is a great quarterback — that’s very exciting.”
With Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz starting, Randle will compete with Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden for playing time.
“They are expecting big things from me, and I have to live up to it. I think I can get there,” Randle said of being ready to contribute this season. “I am still young and learning on the fly. With the right time and the right opportunity, I can be there.”
For the next few months, Randle will have to learn the playbook and be ready to go when the team starts training camp in Albany in late July.
“Football is football,” Randle said. “It’s just learning the terminology and seeing how they use things and run things. The routes are many of the same we ran in college.”

Read More: Osi Umenyiora (DE – NYG), Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants
The NFC East title is on the line this weekend when the New York Giants meet the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium, and the Giants might have an unexpected contributor.
Defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who has missed the last four games since suffering an ankle injury on Nov. 28, will be a surprise return to practice on Wednesday as the Giants prepare to face the Cowboys.
Coach Tom Coughlin said Umenyiora has undergone a series of tests and that team doctors have finally cleared him for return.
Umenyiora’s return to the practice field does not necessarily mean he will play on Sunday night against the Cowboys. A report on Monday cited a source who claimed that Umenyiora was still “weeks” away from healing properly, and his availability will depend on how his body responds to work this week.
As is sometimes the case, good news comes with bad. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was a surprise addition to the injury report with a hamstring injury he suffered Saturday against the Jets. Coughlin expressed optimism that Nicks and Mario Manningham — both expected to miss practice on Wednesday — should be available against the Cowboys.

Christmas 2011 is going to be merrier for one faction of Tri-State area football fans than the other, because the New York Giants (7-7) and New York Jets (8-6) will play a game on Christmas Eve that has playoff ramifications for both teams.
“We’ll play hard,” Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka told Yahoo! Contributor Network after New York fell to the Washington Redkins 23-10 this past Sunday. “We know [the Jets are] going to come out good, but we know our offense is going to be fully ready to go. We got to be able to come out as a defense and just get stops.”
“Bragging rights,” a phrase you’ll hear ad nauseam as game day approaches, is of infinitesimal importance when juxtaposed to an inexorable truth about this game: Should the Giants lose and Dallas Cowboys (8-6) defeat the Philadelphia Eagles (6-8) this weekend, their season is over.
“The significance is, for us to achieve our goal—which is winning the Super Bowl—we have to win this game,” Kiwanuka said. “That’s it.”
“They’re a good football team,” defensive end Chris Canty said. “You are what you are in this league. And with their record, they’re a good football team. We know their brand of football. They play defense, they want to run the football.
“We’re gonna have to put them under a microscope and try to familiarize ourselves as much as we can with what they’re doing,” he added, “and try to give ourselves the best opportunity to be successful on Saturday.”
Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis will likely split time defending Big Blue’s top two receivers, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. Given how immensely talented each of the three are, watching Revis defend either play-maker should be one of the more entertaining aspects of Saturday’s New York-New York showdown.
“Always looking forward for a challenge,” Nicks told YCN. “They’re a good football team. They’re a good, strong, solid football team. [They] play defense well, play offense well. We got to go out there and play.”

Words no New York Giants fans wants to hear: Gunshots, NYC, nightclub, players.
Five New York Giants were partying with other sports bigs and celebs at a Chelsea nightclub early Tuesday when a gunman opened fire, killing an ex-con and injuring two others, police sources said.
The gunman, clad in a white leather jacket, crashed the crowded party at the Juliet Supper Club on W. 21st St. by squeezing off five shots shortly before 2:30 a.m., police said.
Giants receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, cornerback Aaron Ross, safety Antrel Rolle and tackle Chris Canty were all chilling at the hotspot when the gunman unleashed the deadly shots, the sources said.
Not quite shades of Plaxico Burress, but still quite scary. This is only the third most interesting subplot to Giants-Eagles this week.
1) Mike Vick’s ribs
2) Philadelphia season and Andy Reid’s future

The New York Giants were allegedly partying in a club where, as previously reported by IBTimes, one man was killed and two others were injured early Tuesday morning. Police are still looking for the suspected gunman.
Wide receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, defensive end Chris Canty and defensive backs Antrel Rolle and Aaron Ross were all at the Juliet Supper Club at the time when fatal shots rang out, according to The Daily News. None of the players were injured and all made it practice said Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. Police officials say that the shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m. and that none of the Giants players were involved.
“There is nothing to indicate that any of the well-known individuals in the club that night had anything to do with the shooing,” Paul J. Browne, the New York Police Department’s chief spokesman, told the New York Times.
Artis Aruthr,43, was shot twice and pronounced dead. A 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman are in stable condition, according to the Associated Press.
The Juliet Supper Club is a well-known nightclub for celebrities and athletes, including Lebron James. The club was also the crime scene of murder last year.

Nov 12, 2011 – The New York Giants – who have been bitten by the injury bug all season long – added another surprise player to their injury report today, one day prior to their game against the NFC West-leading San Francisco 49ers.
Wide receiver Mario Manningham is now listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with a knee injury according to Mike Mazzeo and Ohm Youngmisuk from ESPN New York:
Mario Manningham (knee) has been added to the Giants’ injury report and is questionable for Sunday afternoon’s game in San Francisco. Manningham, along with Hakeem Nicks, is considered to be a game-time decision according to a source.
Manningham has been a full participant in practice all week, but his right knee swelled Saturday morning. The fourth-year receiver has 27 receptions for 323 yards and two touchdowns this season. If he sits out Sunday, it will be the second game he has missed with injury this year.

The San Francisco 49ers will host the New York Giants in a battle that should determine who the NFC’s second-best team is. The 49ers have won six consecutive games while the Giants have won three consecutive games since getting upset by the Seattle Seahawks.
Both teams have significant injuries to overcome for this game. How will they affect each team? Here are just a few of those injuries and what to expect about their availability.
New York Giants: WR Hakeem Nicks(notes)
Led by Patrick Willis(notes), the 49ers have the NFL’s No. 1 run defense as they surrender just over 70 yards per game. The Giants have the NFL’s 29th-ranked run offense as they average fewer than 89 yards per game.
The Giants will likely rely on Eli Manning(notes) and his receivers if they’re going to pull off a road upset. There are some concerns about Hakeem Nicks as he wasn’t able to participate in practice on November 9, 2011. Nicks didn’t play against the New England Patriots because of a sore hamstring. Fortunately, Nicks should be ready. Nicks has been able to run on the hamstring with little trouble.
New York Giants: RB Ahmad Bradshaw(notes)
The Giants’ run offense was already floundering before Ahmad Bradshaw suffered a foot fracture in their victory over the Buffalo Bills on October 30. Bradshaw had already missed the game against the Patriots. He still hasn’t returned to the practice field as of November 10. It doesn’t appear like Bradshaw will be available against the 49ers.
San Francisco 49ers: WR Michael Crabtree(notes)
The 49ers had already lost Josh Morgan(notes) to a season-ending injury after he broke his leg . Crabtree has been playing through a foot injury. However, it’s highly unlikely that he wouldn’t play against the Giants.
San Francisco 49ers: RB Frank Gore(notes)
The Giants aren’t the only team with a hobbling running back. Frank Gore was limping after the 49ers’ 19-11 victory over the Washington Redskins on November 6. Gore was diagnosed with an ankle injury and has been limited at practice throughout the week. Gore is critical to the 49ers as he’s the NFL’s third-leading rusher with 782 yards. He’s had five consecutive 100-yard rushing performances.
Jim Harbaugh and Gore don’t appear concerned. Gore insists that he’s alright and that he’ll be ready for the Giants.
Other Notable Injuries: C David Baas(notes), DT Ray McDonald(notes), OL Stacy Andrews(notes), DE Osi Umenyiora(notes), WR Jerrel Jernigan(notes), CB Prince Amukamara(notes)

The New York Giants continue their measured timeline for bringing back wide receiver Hakeem Nicks as they slowly increase his practice workload. Nicks sat out Wednesday practice but was upgraded to limited participation on Thursday. Limited participation can vary, but often it means a player takes part in individual drills but sits out the team portion of the workout.
The key now for Nicks is to see if he gets upgraded to full participation on Friday. If he is limited for a second straight day, it would be tough to see him play. At worst he is likely a game-time decision against the 49ers. It is a 4:15pm ET start in San Francisco so you need to make sure you can adjust accordingly. Last week, the Giants declared him out early enough for appropriate lineup adjustments. This week might not be so smooth.
If Nicks is playing he is worth starting against a secondary that has been solid but made enough mistakes to justify starting receivers against them (unlike their rush defense against running backs). If Nicks sits, Victor Cruz is likely the biggest beneficiary.

The @Giants have activated WR Ramses Barden to the 53-man roster..Nicks, Bradshaw & Baas have been ruled out for Patriots Game
Nicks suffered a hamstring during the Giants week eight win over the Miami Dolphins. He has not practiced all week and did not travel with the team.

New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin spoke to the media Friday, confirming that running back Ahmad Bradshaw would not undergo surgery after cracking a bone in his foot.
Bradshaw missed Friday’s practice and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s meeting with the New England Patriots. He is joined on the injury report by a host of other important contributors.
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is questionable for Sunday amid concerns that he might have a concussion. Pierre-Paul underwent concussion tests after a practice collision resulted in a headache, and missed Friday’s practice.
Hakeem Nicks (hamstring) also missed Friday’s practice, riding the bike instead. He is listed as questionable for Sunday, as is fullback Henry Hynoski (neck).
First-round draft choice Prince Amukamara (questionable) will travel with the team this weekend and could see his first game action of the season. He has missed the first eight weeks of the season with a broken foot suffered in August.
Center David Baas (knee) is listed as doubtful.

The Giants again were hit with injuries Sunday in their victory over Miami.
The NFC East leaders saw receiver Hakeem Nicks (hamstring), center David Baas (knee), running back Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) and cornerback Justin Tryon (stinger) get tweaked in the 20-17 win.
None of the injuries is considered serious and each of the players returned except Nicks, who pulled up near the end of the game.
“I was running and getting into my route and it caught my attention,” Nicks said. “I knew I could not go back in there and do anything on it, so I had to be smart.”
Other injuries
– Dolphins center Mike Pouncey left in the second half after taking a blow to the head.
– Bengals cornerback Pacman Jones, playing for the first time since the sixth game of last season, strained a hamstring in the first quarter and did not return.
– Montario Hardesty left in the first half with a strained right calf and didn’t return, leaving the Browns without their top two running backs at Candlestick. He is scheduled to have an MRI exam today.
– Broncos safety Quinton Carter sustained a concussion.
– Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis missed a few plays in the first half with a right shoulder injury against Arizona, then returned.
– The Panthers lost Jason Phillips (calf) and Thomas Williams (neck). Carolina cornerback Darius Butler missed the game to be with his daughter, who had open-heart surgery last week. She had a setback Friday but is doing better, according to team officials.
Bears to franchise Forte? Chicago plans to use its franchise tag on running back Matt Forte if the sides haven’t progressed in contract-extension talks by February, according to multiple reports.
Forte leads the league with 1,091 yards from scrimmage and could challenge the record set by Tennessee’s Chris Johnson (2,509) in 2009. Chicago had a bye last week.
If he is given the franchise tag, Forte’s 2012 salary will be the average of the top five running-back salaries this season. He has said he would prefer a long-term deal.
